Hours? I could only tolerate the awful noise for about 10 minutes and then turned it off before the neighbours complained! :( Got mine on fleabay for about £12 so returning it might be a bit of a hassle...... Will try testing it once more though as soon as I can find my earplugs! :)

Just put your hand over the alarm/speaker ;)

I'd much prefer a plug in detector, no need to check or change batteries. Then a bit of tape over the on/off switch on the wall socket so I cannot turn it off by mistake.

Really into the bit of tape over the on/off switch now ever since a 'kind' painter turned my freezer off by mistake !

You don't change the batteries, thats the point. They last 5 years which is the life of the unit.

    Advantages:

1, not tempted to keep using it over the 5 years.
2, location, they can go in the ideal location (not restricted to plug location, low level is not ideal!)
3, as its battery you can take on holiday (caravan, Spain etc)

Go for a battery one every time.

Also: the serial number on the back of the BG ones tells its age and the manufacturers are happy to replace based on that.

I just wanted to again recommend the detector available from the british gas site that I linked to on the previous page.
Yes it is battery operated but the batteries are included, not replaceable and guaranteed to last for 5 years - the last one we had lasted for 8 years before the batteries went and we had to buy another.

For a life saving device I wouldn't be looking for something on the cheap!

I've had this detector (SF350) for around 8 years as well. However it is now making intermittent bleeps. I assume the battery has gone and so the unit needs replacing. I'll happily buy a new one, but my question is how do i stop the present one from bleeping every minute and how do I then dispose of it? The battery is enclosed so I can't remove it.

    Hi

I'm a retailer and wanted to tell people about an issue with a carbon monoxide detector from PROTEAM (the packaging is blue and white and it clearly says PROTEAM on it). We put these into our stores a few weeks ago but they are currently taken off sale because the company admits there may be an issue with them. Trading Standards offices have been made aware of it - I know because I got a visit about them just 10 minutes after I had taken them off sale due to a customer return.

I don't know which other retailers sell PROTEAM stock (and there is a chance the company do own label stock and also that lots of companies have bought the same stock from the factory in China) but I wanted to make people aware.

    All the best

I should say that it is pending further QC check, so it might turn out to be ok.

Can you keep us updated funkmaster please?
I've got one of these units and although it seems to be ok, I would like to know if there are any issues
  • I don't think that this alarm does what it says on the tin!
I have had customers that have had problems with it. It has a Kitemark printed on the packaging, I contacted British Standards, they told me that a Kitemark has NOT been granted to this product. Therefore if you have bought one simply take it back!

A good site for more information on this and other Carbon Monoxide Alarms is http://www.carbonmonoxideinfo.org In particular they refer to trading standards having concerns about the Proteam alarm and if it actually works.

There is also a usefull product comparison chart on that site.

Whatever you buy it MUST have independent testing to BS EN 50291 and MUST be Kitemarked or how do you know if it works!
The Kitemark is THE independent test authority in this country, operated by British Standards it not only tests one sample to see if it conforms but has an ongoing random ability to test without notice. It is also removed if a product is not to spec.
  • Be very carefull if you are going to buy the one at Robert Dyas. The one shown in the link is refered to in a press release by Kent Trading Standards, suggesting that you RETURN IT FOR A REFUND.

Go to https://www.carbonmonoxideinfo.org and look for the bit about Trading Standards. There is also a product comparison showing who's product is tested.
