Right, well I e mailed the manufacturer and he has just got back to me.
Apparantly this is a quite common problem and it is to do with the unit not acclimatizing properly. He said what you should do is take it out of the packaging and leave it on the side for an hour or so, it should then function properly.
I'll try this and see if it helps :beer:0 -
I had a faulty one which I exchanged. I plugged the new one in and it didn't screech like the other one I had but it did keep going off with slight changes in the air i.e spraying kitchen cleaner spray or making sandwiches near it!!
I took it back today and got a refund back to the drawing board to find another one!!0 -
was going to buy one of these but now a bit curious as to the reliability... does anyone know any similarly priced alarms that might be of better quality or perhaps of the same brand that some of the gas companies choose to use?ummm...0

Search online for the SF detection model SF350EN.
This is the only one i know of that has Corgi approval and is recommended by British Gas and Scottish gas amongst others.
It is a 5 year disposable (long life) battery operated model you can use at home and take on hols. I got one on ebay for approx £14.0 -
depending on the accommodation you are staying in, it is a good idea to take one on holiday with you.0

I've just bought the one from Robert Dias and like others listed here it took a while to settle down. It now hovers between 0 and 1.
However, I am aware of it making a constant "whirring" noise which is very noticeable.
Has anyone else come across this issue - before I take it back!0 -
yes for a couple of mins at the most though, mine went on for hours, lol.
Hours? I could only tolerate the awful noise for about 10 minutes and then turned it off before the neighbours complained!Got mine on fleabay for about £12 so returning it might be a bit of a hassle...... Will try testing it once more though as soon as I can find my earplugs!

I just wanted to again recommend the detector available from the british gas site that I linked to on the previous page.
Yes it is battery operated but the batteries are included, not replaceable and guaranteed to last for 5 years - the last one we had lasted for 8 years before the batteries went and we had to buy another.
For a life saving device I wouldn't be looking for something on the cheap!0 -

Mine makes a buzzing noise but it isnot very loud and as it is situated in the cupboard with the boiler you can't hear it at all.
It took around two or three days for it to settle down but then it did exactly what it is supposed to. Is currently happily displaying '0'0
