  • The thing is no one knows what this surgery is for. I find it difficult to believe the NHS would not provide necessary treatment.. I know a lot of people would disagree but with my own experience I find it difficult.
The surgery could be a nose job or fat reduction for all we know, but to spend money you haven't got seems.. I don't know but not right. I have been through bankruptcy myself and I know how that affects your life.
Besides what would the op live on in Portugal? ... running away won't solve anything.

OP's girlfriend has some chronic condition preventing her from work, I doubt that the procedure required is nose job or fat reduction

I get the feeling ( and dont get me wrong I AM PROBABLY WRONG).

But reading between the lines ure missus doesn't work for a long time... either she is elligble for sick pay (if she is deemed unfit for any type of work) or she isn't elligble and therefore can do some type of work (i.e. office work or anything) but doesn't want to.

Because she doesn't want to work she can't claim jobseekers as she would turn down jobs.

It would help if you'd explain why your partner can't work. As its quite obvious the easiest way out of it is your partner to get a job even minimum wage would tip balance for you to do following:

    1. Consolidate and repay debts
    2. Pay for OP

Even if you push the 'reset' button (bankruptcy) the situation causing u to go bankrupt hasn't change so you would still struggle.

So not to be personal but why can't she work? and why does she need a non-nhs operation? Weight reduction or the like? (I think even weight reduction surgery is available so prob not even that).

If she is truly sick that she can't work or disabled then she can qualify for sick pay or even disability living allowance... if she not elligble then the idea is that she *can* work.

I get the feeling you kinda being taken for a ride mate. Seen it before with mates whos girlfriends 'couldn't' work while guy was working 2 jobs. Or another one where a man has chronic backache and cant work but his wife works 50 hrs a week to get out of debt.... he was later shopped as he could work and was healthy :). Just saying seems your situation doesnt add up.

Simon, I'm not here to judge you or your situation as I don't know either. But with the level of your debt there are other options than Bankruptcy so I would phone one of the organisations in ifwisheswerehorses post above.

But I would mention that if you take out and use credit/debt knowing that you will not be able to pay it back then you may well be given a BRO/U which will make the consequences of Bankruptcy more severe so using credit to pay for an operation knowing you will not be able to pay it back is not wise if you plan on BR.

    Hear! Hear Pippa.

OP please do get in touch with someone like National Debtline tomorrow and go through you circumstances with them. If they suggest BR then you will have to resign as director of your ltd. company, though you can operate as a sole trader.

Good luck and do let us know what they say.

What is the health service like in Potugal? (genuine question)

    From Wiki
The Portuguese health system...The NHS provides universal coverage although they have recently been implemented measures to ensure the sustainability of the service, for example, the implementation of user fees that are paid at the end of the treatments.

I have a chronic health condition which makes it hard for me to find suitable employment. Fortunately I have a job but this would have been near impossible if I was living in a country in which my mother tongue was not spoken - on top of all my health considerations. How difficult will it be for your girlfriend to find work in Portugal assuming her good health is restored after the operation? What does she feel is the best solution as obviously her opinion matters much more than us MSE folk?
  • Human nature, eh...

No, the money is not for nose job, boob job, bum job nor fat reduction...

    It is for IVF procedure...

She has chronic ovarian cysts (not sure if thats the medical term).
So, she cannot get pregnant the ''normal'' way, because NHS butchered her up on 3 occasions (wont go into more details unless someone insist?...I see many people use these forum for entertaining purposes) and her tubes where removed, so ''in vitro'' is the only way for us to have a child... and time is running out since she’s approaching 40 and we all know whats the chances of woman getting pregnant after this age...

yes, NHS paid for the first cycle, since it was unsuccessful, the funding stops there and we have to go private. The clinic we’re going to use is one of the best in Europe (with highest success rate). They put up their prices by at least 10% every January, that’s just one more reason not to waste time.

she had 3 operations in past 2 years (2 within 3 months!) and not really able to do any physical work being very skinny and weak as well. With hearing aid on both ears (but not deaf enough to be classed as disabled we were told) she was refused (not directly of course) any kind of office work too, so here you go why she doesn’t work. Plus, not much work going around at the moment to choose from innit?...

If this is not a genuine reason to ‘’steal’’ (you called me thief right) from the fat bankers that ruined our world, don’t know what is…

    Simon

p.s. DarkFallout, thanks for the kind words and support (and the useful information as well).
  • You are up to your eyes in debt, yet you are planning a baby? You need to sort out your priorities, that is certainly not a good reason to steal.

I still dont understand why the wife doesnt work? Infertility treatment is noble.. And i can certainly see why getting it is important. But its not guranteed. Why not adopt?

Never answered why ure wife cant work?

That doesn't really sound like a woman who would be accepted for IVF treatment by any ethical organisation.

It's a good thing I don't believe a word of any of your posts. Otherwise I would worry about your GF's wellbeing.
  • Hi Simon1980 .... we aren't here to judge !!!
After reading your post I empathise with your situation. I have friends who are desperate to have children; I see their pain and so wish you much luck in regards to this chapter of your life. You are obviously upset and very worried and I think you should take one step back and take a deep breath. Contact the agencies that Tigerfeet has suggested and take on board any advice that is given to you. As an interim proposal what about contacting your credit card companies and explaining your employment situation and offering a lower minimum payment ( if you don't ask you don't get .)
If you did go to Portugal how long do you think you would be able to stay over there for ? Would you be in a position to support yourself and your girlfriend ? If you stayed out of the country for 6 years and were uncontactable by your creditors then I think the ' statute of limitation ' would apply ( someone will correct me if I'm wrong) ... However to disappear for a debt of 5 - 10 thousand pounds I feel is a knee jerk reaction when in reality there are options available to you if you seek advice from the agencies recommended.
I really do wish you much luck and you will receive lots of support from this forum. Be positive, circumstances do change and folk are offered jobs when they least expect them.
