  • Ok.

So if the operation is not for anything life threatening.. surely you could postpone it for a while whilst you pay off your debts? You simply cannot afford to pay out on non necessary things.

On the scheme of things the level of your debt is not so great, going to Portugal is no good, you will be looking over your shoulder all the time. Bankruptcy may be an option but you need proper advice.

I am sure you will get some good advice on here.

Life is sometimes a bit pants but occasionally you can wear your french knickers! :D
  • I would not advise running or going bankrupt, having 5-10K of non-secured debt is not a good reason for neither

you think this is ''small'' amount?
Try to shift the debt on 0% or low APR

since I've got 3 CC's already, getting fourth with at least 5k limit is nearly impossible imo. even with my credit score which is rather good.
Seek advice with regards to benefits and tax credits as I doubt that you do not qualify for anything

    we shall ask again
Anyway, if you are not able to live normally with the money you get and pay your debt at the same time, as it is non-secured and you are not a homewoner, it would be possible to write it off

''write off'' as in go bankrupt, IVA or something else you have in mind? I definitely have more going out than coming in and the outlook is even more daunting... :(
Going to Portugal with the current economic situation would be a suicide

you finding the situation here ''better''?...

    thanks for your help

    define a ''while'' please.

a month, 3 months, 6 months, year, 2 or 5?... we've been putting it off for almost a year now. the ''not so great'' amount of 6k will take me at least 3 years to clear if I have a job at all...

since now I still have access to some money, the matter becoming ''now or never'' thing

    thanks for your input

p.s. that NHS thinks condition is not ''life threatening'', does not mean we accept and agree with it (as matter of fact, we might be taking them to court for negligence, once we have some money). but, this is way off topic already and I do not wish to discuss my partner's health condition here.

  • you think this is ''small'' amount?

yes it is, the only reason you are struggling is because your partner is not working ... there are many people with 100-200-300K debt ...

I do not know your average APR, but you can try consolidaiton loan as well

you finding the situation here ''better''?...

You want advice on dealing with your debt, you have mentioned that you are spending £5k on an operation that is not deemed necessary by the NHS and you expect people to just ignore that?

I think you are basically ripping off your creditors.
You are increasing your debt by £5k and evading responsibility.

You don't want a way out of debt, you want a way to get the Op done and not pay for it.

    Yes.

Portugal is bust. Bailed out by the EU. Debt is virtually junk bond status. Succesive rounds of austerity measures including 30% wage cuts for teachers.

    Weather's nicer though.

I do not agree with you ...

I feel that they see this surgery as last resort measure and it is done only only on private

The guy is honest and knows that he will be in difficulty afterwards, actually he is already in difficulty

Being anxious everyday about the future will not help him to get better in terms of money, or his partner to get better with health

So he needs to know, that he can try his best, but even if he will not manage to pay his debts, the world will not end

I don't think he is a fraudster trying to rip off his creditors on purpose
  • The thing is no one knows what this surgery is for. I find it difficult to believe the NHS would not provide necessary treatment.. I know a lot of people would disagree but with my own experience I find it difficult.
The surgery could be a nose job or fat reduction for all we know, but to spend money you haven't got seems.. I don't know but not right. I have been through bankruptcy myself and I know how that affects your life.
Besides what would the op live on in Portugal? ... running away won't solve anything.

Is this op that costs £5k important ?

So your going to max out the cards for an op, could you not put it towards the debts instead ? Whats the chances of success ? What about getting it done abroad ?

Why can't it wait until your in a much better financial position ?
  • Simon, I'm not here to judge you or your situation as I don't know either. But with the level of your debt there are other options than Bankruptcy so I would phone one of the organisations in ifwisheswerehorses post above.

But I would mention that if you take out and use credit/debt knowing that you will not be able to pay it back then you may well be given a BRO/U which will make the consequences of Bankruptcy more severe so using credit to pay for an operation knowing you will not be able to pay it back is not wise if you plan on BR.
