Creda storage heater

Hi I wonder if any experts here can help
Just moved into this flat with storage heaters, tried the following

Set heater timer: from 7pm to 7am on this tool - Timeguard TS900B 24 Hour Immersion Heater Time Controller

3 Storage heaters: Fuses On for
Living Room
a) 1 with room temperature setting: Combi and output 4
b) 1 with Output (AM: set to 2, PM: Set to 4) Input (AM: set to 5, PM: remain 5)
Hallway:
c) 1 with Output (AM: set to 2, PM: Set to 4) Input (AM: set to 5, PM: remain 5)

However, none of the storage heaters have output any heat despite i have repeating the above for 3 days. Does this mean the storage heaters are no longer functioning and i need to ring up a technician to look into it..?

*gotta be prepared for the cold winter soon...>.<

thanks in advance for any advice!

  • The immersion heater time controller probably controls your immersion heater (hot water) not your storage heaters.

Check the circuit breakers at the off-peak consumer unit. Do the storage heaters have neons on their wall switches and do these neons glow at night when you should be getting off-peak electricity?

Firstly yes check that the wall switch is showing on.

Did you have both the input and output turned on overnight when storing as that is probably the problem. While storing only the input should be used as the output will simply drain all the heat. The output is merely to give extra heat for a short time.

    Hi,

check switches and fuses as already advised.

I would have output to zero at bedtime and if out to work during the day, open at night for extra heat.

You shouldn't need your immersion heater on for 12 hours if it is well insulated, set it to come on during your cheap rate periods, (possibly 11/12pm-7/8am), and only for an hour or so as near to when you get up in the morning, then you have hot water for starting the day, adjust timing as required, you can always give it a boost if needed during the day.
  • Thanks all so much for replies! I probably have a very old flat,,,i dont seem to have any neons on wall switches. There is a main switch that has the on / off button then switches for each of the storage heaters,,i will try putting output to 0 to see if that's the problem (and yes i have the output on with different level all day long,,,,) btw I'm not sure where i can find the off-peak consumer unit..taken some photos hopefully one could be it..? (keep getting message that i'm not allowed to post link as a new user:(.. so i put a space between the https and : hopefully it goes thru

Think there should be another consumer unit (picture 4) for heating.

Could you put up a photie of heaters and wall switches?
  • On your meter, can you check that the little flag to the left of the displays clicks between Low and Normal at night? Check also the meter readings in the evening and morning.

If it doesn't you have a faulty teleswitch (which as well as changing the meter between rates also controls the off-peak supply to the heaters) and your electricity supplier will need to book a meter operative to visit.

  • Thanks Fulgal i have uploaded 5 pictures of the 2 heaters (one with room temperature and output settings one with input and output settings) even now with the main switch on the heater has no response at all :(
Btw Owain, just checked the meter think it's on normal day rate now so the flag is pointing down (normal) will check at night later to see if the flag point to other direction, fingers cross its not a big electric prob,,

I have the same storage heaters as you. Unless there's something wrong with the meter, I can't see why all three would have failed. There's not a lot that can go wrong. The previous resident's haven't nicked the bricks have they? I understand some people use them for barbecues...

Also if other residents have the same heating, its worth asking them about problems, chances are they also know the local person who's best able to make the fixes. Where I am we have one guy that everyone knows that can be called on to do most of the work.

I know things don't look great at the moment, but for the most part I love living in a house with storage heating because generally you do only get one bit fail at a time and there's always an alternative such as another you can move to with heat, or a second immersion on the tank. I'm scratching my head to know how they can all have failed unless the previous owner has done b*gger all to maintain their place and let them go one by one.
