No central heating, would really like advice

Hi,

I live in a (privately rented) 3 bed maisonette above a shop which has no gas and so no central heating.
Last year winter was bitter, could see our breath inside all the time, beds and bathing were unbareable etc and I was spending up to £100 a month on running electric heaters.
All the heaters were only on for a short while each but it still cost me that amount! Perhaps because of the size of my rooms and because I have no loft or wall space and therefore no availability for insulation.
Any advice on what I can do to keep me and my daughter warm this winter would be gratefully recieved!
Eco heaters or alternatives to electric ones?!
Thanks

What about oil heaters? I believe they use less electricity and stay warm for a longer period of time? We use them in our office at work during the winter months.
  • I have used oil heaters at home and found them very good and not to expensive to run as hold heat for a while when switched off

  • Years ago we used Calor gas heaters, and found them both effective and relatively economical - certainly much more so than the electric fan heater which had been our only previous heating! The downside is that you have to keep getting the cylinders (from memory I am pretty sure we used to have them delivered, as we had no transport of our own). But they certainly kept us warm, and didn't break the bank.
