Nec Versa M500 wireless connection?

Just reinstalled XP Sp3 on Versa laptop, but can't get wireless connection to work? I'm know that drivers are required but not sure what to install to get wireless working. Have tried a driver for Intel Pro/wireless Lan 2100 mini PCI adapter which can see's the router but will not connect? Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks

What happens when you attempt to connect to the router?
How do I add a signature?
  • When laptop is turned on it says 'wireless networks detected'
When trying to connect it says ' windows is unable to connect to the selected network. the network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks and try to connect again'

Nb there is plenty of signal strength!

first, sure it's SP3 ? Do a command prompt, and type "netsh winsock reset catalog/ " without the quotes but remember the space at the end. Reboot the lappy. If it still won't connect, you need to find newer drivers for the card, ethernet to the router and go to intel's site and use their hardware detecting utility to find the best driver for your card.

  • As GunJack says but also which channel is your router using, some Xp drivers did not work with channels 12/13 - they were/are not available in the US

Thanks, did try your suggestion without success! Can't even connect to net with cable. Network diagnostics says 'could not detect any wired or wireless network cards'! Under devices has a network adapter 1394 which says is working ok and connected. But have a whole list:-

Ethernet controller, multimedia controller, network controller, pci flash memory, pci modem, unknown device, video controller and video controller (VGA Compatible) all of which have big yellow question mark and don't have drivers!! I'm guessing these would all have been on utilities disk which would have come with laptop when new and would have been installed after Windows to get network cards wireless and wired working? Have seen a few drivers on NEC site but not sure which to use? Shame they don't have a download for utilities disk.

Yup, you need to download the drivers on another machine, transfer them to the NEC via a USB stick. If you do the ethernet one first, then you can hook it up to your router and download the rest directly :)

or, dcm's link is for the wifi card, do that via the usb method (you need to RUN that file on the lappy, it's an .exe) and you should have wifi proper....

  • Unfortunately, this driver (P600WLANXP.exe) doesn't seem to work - what I had tried before! Doesn't even see, the Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter under device manager. Doesn't appear under device manager if using above file. If I use the BT3_XP_WLAN.exe file, the adapter appears under Network adapters. It sees all available wireless networks but will not connect even with password. It just keeps trying!

The Via-Rhine3.exe file has finally given me wired connection!

I must be doing something really stupid or missing something obvious! Just seem to be going round and round in circles:mad:
