Yes there is - it's, perhaps confusingly, called the "Direct Debit Guarantee".
I have about 20 X DDs per month, plus a smattering of quarterly and annual ones as well. Never had a problem.
What the anti-DD brigade never offer is a suggestion of a better alternative. I cannot think of a safer way to pay.
My apologies, I had meant to state that there is no guarantee that banks will refund charges caused by an error. Which there isn't.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.
