Required to send me a CC statement each month?

  • Is the August statement on-line? if yes, they have issued you with a statement. You could have logged in and checked, if the statement by mail was overdue.

If it's not on-line, then you have a case.

Mail doesn't normally go missing in my part of the world.
Tesco T&C's don't have anything as you have stated

"You must make a payment even if we don't send a statement", and
"You must make a payment even if you don't receive a statement"

Thank you YorkshireBoy for that bit of info. You must be one of the lucky ones with dd's I've had nothing but trouble with them and the jobs I've worked in, I've seen them go very wrong.

  • The DD guarantee protects you. In over 30 years of using them I've never had a rogue payment taken, or one that I hadn't been notified of at least 10 working days prior.

The notification is the very statement that the OP is talking about not receiving. So in the context of the OP, there could have been an unexpected attempt to take a payment from his/her current account.

If there was a fraud on the account and the OP didn't see a statement in time to dispute it, then an inflated DD would be taken. This could cause serious inconvenience - perhaps leaving insufficient funds for other payments, possibly incurring charges. It's doubful whether the so-called DD guarantee would help - afterall it would have been the correct amount in the context of the undisputed balance.

OR the DD could have bounced. This would have all the disadvantages of a missed payment, plus additional charges on top.

In over 30 years of not using DDs, I've never missed a payment.....:D:D:D

Unfortunately banks are not infallible and signing a DD is tantamount to giving free access to your bank account. OK there is the DD guarantee but that is pretty ineffective in the case of a bank error. There is no guarantee that the bank will refund an error.

I do not trust the DD system despite pretty much every organisation expecting me to give them the freedom to dip into my account.

Yes there is - it's, perhaps confusingly, called the "Direct Debit Guarantee".

I have about 20 X DDs per month, plus a smattering of quarterly and annual ones as well. Never had a problem.

What the anti-DD brigade never offer is a suggestion of a better alternative. I cannot think of a safer way to pay.

Yes and if they don't then the debt is written off and you don't have to pay another penny.
Call me cynical if you will but I get the feeling that was the answer you were hoping for.

Tesco got back to me, they have wiped the £12 late fee off my account. I didn't get an full explanation they just 'resolved' it.
I will be all paid and up to date as usual in 3-5 working days time when my payment clears. I've requested them to cancel the cc when the payment has cleared so bye bye tesco.
Thanks again to all those who helped.
