FYI - from the RSPCA site:

    Expensive veterinary treatment

Before you give up a pet because of expensive medical bills do some research. Some of our branches, where funds allow, may be able to help those in receipt of a low income state benefit. To find out if your local branch is able to help you, please visit in your area and select ‘veterinary financial aid’ under ‘service’. There may also be other charities that are able to help.

  • the only worry that i can see is that it is now saturday afternoon and i think most vets will be closed until monday apart from emergencies, which then they charge a lot more for. Would they then be happy to treat the dog and then get paid monthly?

Are we allowed to ask if there may be any vets/ vet nurses on the board for advice or is this against the rules, i dont know?

  • how is everything Fiona??
  • Can you get enough together for a consultation?

Your dog needs to see a vet urgently. As a species, dogs are designed to hide pain. The fact that you know he's in pain, means he will be in a lot more than he's letting on.

It might be something fairly simple and cheap to get him well again. It may not, but at the very least, he needs a consultation so you can make an informed decision.

Please get him to a vet.

If you can't afford a dog you shouldn't have one.

Leaving an animal in pain because you feel it's 'part of the family' is awful. I doubt he would want to be part of your family, I assume he'd rather be part of a family where he could access medical care.

I think your morals about not committing fraud in order to get the animal treatment, but being prepared to leave it in agony because you want to retain it as a pet is despicable.

You've had many suggestions here that you say you can't take - so give the animal to a centre, or get it destroyed. But do not keep an animal suffering. That isn't pet ownership, that's just selfish.
  • Forgot to add not to take him on any walks, no stairs or jumping up until he's seen the vet, hope he feels better soon :)
  • also want to add, that what others have said is so right. Dogs are very good at hiding pain and he will be feeling so miserable. I would bite the bullet, take him to the vets, even if its just for the consultation then play it from there. I would rather have a well dog who you love and loves you back and owe the vet the money.x
  • Hi All

Thanks for all your help, just want to point out that when we bought the dog we were in a financial position to care for him, it is only over the past few weeks that time has been hard due to the council deciding to use the services of a bigger company, so loss of income.

I have taken him to any emergency vet whom has advised that he has a herniated disc. He needs surgery which i have been quoted £1789+vat for and the consultation has just cost £129+. I have made an arangment to pay the consultaion fee when he has his surgery.

I have just listed my car on ebay through a one day auction to fund his care and once his better i will be finding a new home for him, as due to the sudden loss of income it would be sensible for someone else to care for him.
  • well done for taking him. When will he have the op? Could you not still keep him once the op has taken place? xx
