Kitchen Refit

  • It's not rocket science as several posters have pointed out but at least put plenty of thought into the planning stage. Position of electric sockets, correct supply if electric oven, acredited gas fitter to alter any gas pipes/supply,same with plumbing. Carefully work out how your worktop joints are going to be installed, not always the easiest job. Strip off old tiles, are walls/plaster OK for new tiling?Have you worked out how doors/handles/units work on corners?
Four trades at least involved and as an add-on I never install kitchens if the property is occupied."Oh,don't worry,we will manage to keep out of your way" Sorry, doesn't work like that, unless you want a weeks work to last 3.
    Regards and Bonne Chance.

8 hours is a whole day's work - I guess that kind of contingency is factored into a quote. I'm impressed with granite! Did you source that cleverly too?

Work top, splash back, uprights and cills all being done by the local fire place company at a very very good price

And my back is feeling every one of those eight hours. My 7 hour shift as a cook today will feel like a holiday lol

Jaynne, I'd be happy with a quote along those lines.

Just want to say that we are struggling to keep to the 10k budget we set aside. And we are doing the bulk of the work ourselves

To be fair we did take out a utility room, build up door opening and windows and resituated new ones -including a 10 foot patio door

All the electrics have had to be moved

    Plumbing as well

It took a week just to get the tiles of the floor and retiled -23 sq meters of porcelain - once again peanuts (well a really good price) for the tiles but would hate to think what the labour costs would have been for prepping and laying

We are also getting mates rates when we do use skilled workers

We have shopped around and got fantastic prices when buying from independents rather then letting one place do all. But I've been living on a building site since middle of August and think there's another 3 weeks before I have my kitchen in full. I'm kind of used to living on building site as we do the work ourselves but for others that an unbearable nightmare

And the three more weeks may be longer if my sink don't arrive in the next few days :( The joys of living in NI - any non stock item can take a month to arrive

You are looking at it the wrong way. If it took you a week it would have taken a tiler a lot less - probably 3 at the very most including digging the oldones out and prepping.

Ha Ha. There is absolutely no such animal as "mates rates".

thank you for this, this is exactly what i was trying to point out, while you are doing it yourself which is great you are finding out how much work is involved, yes a professional fitter would have done it quicker but you would pay for that, which brings me back to the OP's first post & she was getting angry with the people who were quoting thinking that she was being ripped off, but it's not until you start to diy it that you realise how hard, how skilled, how many diff tools you need & thats the prob people think it's just a case of screwing a few units together when in reality it's much more than that
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

You have misunderstood or I haven't explained myself properly. You might be getting the benefit of cheap labour but someone is paying for it at the end of the day. Now whether thats the taxman or his other customers or his employer I don't know. What I do know is that he's unlikely to compromise his overall income and lifestyle to do "mates rates". He'll be making it up somewhere and so the general concept of "mates rates" is fundamentally flawed.

    Cheers
