This does not work any more in most supermarket e.g Tescos, Asda, Morrisons etc.

It did use to work in somerfield but in my local no more. Not sure about sainsburys as I have not had any reduced items on offer recently.

Which supermarket do you work for/did you work for? CO-OP
What times of day do you reduce prices? Bakery and Fresh food was normally done about 6pm at 75%, if it was out of date on that day,or 25% if it was going out of date the following day. Although some things would bedone earlier if there was a lot of them.
How big are the discounts? (If the computer does it automatically, do a rough estimate) 25% for the next day or 75% for that day.
What time is the final, final reduction (to 10p-ish)? For things to go to that price there would normally haveto be a lot and it would depend on who was reducing them, and it would normally be between 5 pm and 10 pm.
Who has the authority to reduce prices? Supervisor / Management, or the person who was told to reduce things on that day, they would normally be carrying a reduction gun and printer.
If a customer asked you to reduce something because it’s on it’s sell-by date are you allowed to? Depending on what the product was, but I wouldn't see this being a problem.
    Does it vary if it’s a 24-hour store? N/A
And any other useful tips …

Like what other people have said, watch out for things that are on offer and reduced, for example, a pie that is BOGOF normally priced at £1, if you buy two that have both been reduced to 10p, the till will take off £1 still, so you would get two pies at 20p - £1 = -80p. When I worked at the CO-OP just over 2 years ago) all the staff used to look out for these offers!

No, I know. I was just following on from my previous post about Waitrose. I don't really know any good tips for other stores. Thanks though.

But in the post you don't say that. As a lot of people just skim read it so would have no idea that you where referring to waitrose. So I was just point out to others to be aware for it as it does not work all in all supermarkets.

Then it seems that waitrose and sainsburys are the only two that do this now.

    Good to know that.

Hi everyone-i dont work for a supermarket, but today i picked up loads of reduced cakes/bread etc from asda...they seem to put out the reduced bakery stuff between 3 and 4pm just before they close.

So fresh cream cakes were down to silly prices, same with bread (which ive put in the freezer to keep for a bit longer).

    keelykat.

Edited to add- this is on a sunday btw, they close at 4pm on a sunday and then theyre open 24 hours monday to saturday or something like that.

  • Asda-like most, have to sell products by the bb(best before)date/use by date. Since hammering down the prices with suppliers, the mistake they made was to do away with the sale or return agreements that were in place with van sales and sales rep. orders. The relevant Depts.have there own allocated budgets for reductions on products and these are adjusted in relation to sales. The biggest Dept. for reduced products is Provisions(cooked meats/cheese/eggs/pre-packed foods from refridgerated units in stores mainly). With bb.products they must be sold on the day prior to the date stamped on the product, and use by sold by end of buisness of stamped date. The general rule of thumb is that most products nearing their date will recieve up to 10%reduction by the morning of their expirey date,(dependant on trade eg.mondays are not so busy so more of a reduction might take place/as against a friday or saturday).By10am.most products will have been reduced and placed an a fridge that is used mainly for the sale of these products(some stores have a specific area dedicated to reduced items for sale).By 5pm.if products are still not sold then a further reduction will take place(up to 50%)and approx 1 hour before the store is to close all products will recieve a further reduction(up to 75%).The final reductions will be 15mins prior to store closure and might well be down to 10pence an item at this time(but it may be only goats milk and pastrami but hey 10p is 10p).There is tough penaltys by trading standards and enviromental hygiene placed onto stores and the Dept. Managers are responsible in the eyes of the law for breach of legislation(up to 10k fines per offence)so do not be afraid to bring any products that are short in their dates to his/her attention you may be rewarded by having your purchase reduced in price. But for all you serious hard core reduction junkies-Bank Holidays!!!!!!!!!Woohoo!!!.Any time the store has to close its doors and has products that will expire in date prior to the stores re-openning has to sell the stuff, and the best Dept.to aim for would be the fresh meat dept.Poor old Meat Manager has to keep a minimum display on sale yet most of it will go out of date before the store opens again!look for large joints and steaks which you can freeze but think twice about mince or processed products unless you can use them before the dates on the products.(EX-ASDA/MORRISONS MANAGER)
  • Hi, I work at Iceland, we have just started a new reductions policy. damaged packaging is reduced by up to half price. sell by such as meat and poultry are reduced on the day, usually mid morning. we are only allowed to reduce up to half price but considering that you can freeze most items we do reduce you can always get a bargain.

does still work had stuff recently in tesco and local co op.

used to work in tesco and when this happened you had to call a runner/ supervisor but rather than wait 10 mins I just put it through anyway.

think it depends on who you get at the checkput to be honest.
