Great 'supermarket staff tell us your reduction policies' hunt

  • Don't work for any supermarkets, but another thing to look out for is the reduction of seasonal goods. For example, easter eggs are now down to 25% of their original price in all Sainsburys because they overstocked for Easter. (I saw the warehouses in a couple of Sainsburys on Good Friday and they'd both just had huge deliveries of Easter Eggs - so much, in fact, that they didn't know where to store them in the respective warehouses.) Always be aware of the seasonal lines - all year round, there will be seasonal lines. Towards the end of that particular seasonal event, the lines will start to be reduced in order to shift excess stock (we're entering the gardening season now, so you'll start to see all the weed killers, plant food, etc coming onto the seasonal aisles - once they've cleared the easter eggs, that is!). Seasonal goods can be hard lines (non-foods) or foods.

Another thing to watch for is promotions ending. Watch the hard lines for this, too. In Tesco, it will be down to the individual store's Non-Foods Trading Manager on what he reduces and by how much, depending on how much space he needs to clear in the warehouse - if a product is selling slowly at the store has loads of stock, the NFTM will have the line reduced to sell through the stock. I'm sure Constantine can provide you with more info on this, however.

I work for Waitrose. We reduce things all day if they have to go that day or the day after. The more there is that has to go the greater the reduction, also the later in the day the better the bargain.
Other things you might not know, you can pay with coupons at Waitrose even if you have not bought the item that the coupon is for, and you can use up to £10 worth in one transaction. And also, like most supermarkets the longer date stuff is at the back of the shelf, so reach to the back if you want something with a longer shelflife. I've never posted on here before so I'm sorry if all this is obvious or on the wrong thread.

Just thought of something else. Say if you wanted to buy two quiches that were £1.49 each and BOGOF (so £1.49 for two). And they were reduced £0.99p each. BUT, the computer automatically deducts the full price every time two quiches are bought, even if they are reduced so you can get a real bargain. This works for other stuff, not just quiches obviously. Most people don't realise, because they don't often want two quiches or whatever when they are reduced because they won't be able to eat them in time, but why not buy one for a friend, or if you can freeze it then go for it!

This does not work any more in most supermarket e.g Tescos, Asda, Morrisons etc.

It did use to work in somerfield but in my local no more. Not sure about sainsburys as I have not had any reduced items on offer recently.

I remember working at Savacentre (don't think they have them these days, but they were a huge Sainsburys) we used to often be able to buy bread, sandwiches etc after the store had closed for 10p each. I used to live with my parents and one Christmas Eve took home three turkeys that had been reduced to 10p each!

We also used to get "lucky dip" boxes - these were tins that the labels had fallen off!! They'd put about 8 random tins in a box and sell for 10p. I avoided those though...but some of my colleagues did buy them....

  • when i worked at savacentre about 24 years ago i used to think all the customers who bought the reduced stuff late at night were mad and was embarrased that my hubbie would come in to shop on my working days to get the bargains
nowdays i am, that age and find great delight in getting the bargains late at night as i spend over the top on other food feeding my five + guests over the week and love to save a few pence on trying out reduced stuff which i couldn't usually buy
i now shop between sainsburys and tesco because my asda has a terrible parking facility even disabled have a problem as it's so small of an area but the staff are so much nicer, you have rude staff to put up with at sainsburys and tesco so it's a choice to go with who gives you the best service on the day
    staff: asda 100% savacentre 80% sainburys 95% tesco95%
    asda parking 40% tesco100% savacentre 100% sainsbury 95%

No, I know. I was just following on from my previous post about Waitrose. I don't really know any good tips for other stores. Thanks though.

I was in M&S today and was looking at the Oakham chickens.
All except a couple of very large ones (too big for us) had today's date on.
I wanted to get one for tommorrow's dinner while they are on offer.
Am I right in thinking that they never reduce food going out of date as I have never seen it .
Or should I have asked ?
I would have bought some and frozen them if they were further reduced.
Any inside information would be appreciated!

according to a magazine i read , they bin it! never reduce - it all goes in the skip! also saw a programme on tv recently showing people collecting from their skips (technically this is stealing) to give the homeless , mostly bread but some veg and other fresh items not quite out of date.

my mum works for waitrose and she said they reduce the bread upto 4 days before it goes out of date? also in two local waitrose near me weekdays at about 5-5.30 pm is when all the veg and fruit gets reduced to 20p or less , saturdays about 4.30 onwards for meat fish and veg/fruit reductions and sunday morning there is a queue outside for when they open at 10 am ! as all the stuff from the night before that didn't go, is down to 10p and usually has at least a day on its date . I love waitrose :rotfl:
