We've go a blu ray but don't really rate it that much tbh. For the extra you pay for the dvds we didn't notice significant difference to warrant paying the extra. HTHGE 36 *MFD may 2043

well what are you watching on?
We have a 50" plasma and surround sound
I also have films ripped and stored on hard drives, networked over the house
I can easily tell the difference than(for example) Avatar on Bluray Vs a 15GB file on the server
So the difference vs a DVD would be massive
Tell your wife I said it is,so there
On a serious note. what will you be watching the Blurays on?0 -
To be honest, your best bet is to watch a blu-ray at a friend's house if possible.
You won't be able to watch a blu-ray quality clip on your TV without a blu-ray player.
I was blown away by the difference, but you won't notice it on old films (including Titanic). You need to watch recent stuff, shot in HD and intended for blu-ray.
The BBC Planet Earth series is breath-taking on blu-ray. Animation is too - Wall-E looked stunning. Recent movies (Star Trek, Avengers etc) are also great. It certainly is clearer than DVD. Provided you have a 1080p capable TV of course!
I wouldn't bother replacing DVDs of older films with blu-ray. Made the mistake of getting The Matrix on blu-ray and for films where the effects are a bit dated, blu-ray actually makes them look worse!0 -

depends how you view it
yes some scenes such as the lift door flying at the camera, look dated
however its a film with a lot of blacks,so IMO it looks a lot better in bluray
The sound quality is major part many folks miss. though i admit many will be listening on tiny speakers0 -

Sorry, blu ray is only 1080p where as you can download media in 4k (4096p). So not only can you get blu-ray quality but actually a lot better!
To the OP - what "kit" do you have? If you have an ok laptop or computer or tablet with HDMI out you can certainly download either clips or full films at the same quality (or better) of blu-ray.
To get the best out of it you would need a 1080p TV/ Projector and a home cinema system that supports DTS Master Audio. If your TV isnt up to the job you may be better going to a friends that has something better (or ideally the whole lot) otherwise it would be a sub par experience.
I do have a not at all MSE home cinema setup - when a friends wife came round for the same reason not only did she agree to replacing the TV but a couple of k budget for surround sound too
