Proper rustproofing of cars didn't become widespread until about 1996/7.
We talking specifically about Mercs, historically they were well rust proofed then some time in the late 90's early 2000's some accountant said something like why are we double glavernizing our cars. Then you started seeing 5 year old Mercs with rust , just when as you say other manufactures had just got to grips with rust. I believe Merc have now addressed this but time will tell.0 -

Sorry I wasn't very specific. I was taking about pre-1994 Mercedes which were unbelievably over-engineered compared to the post-1994 ones (after the accountants got involved and made them cut corners)
w123 and w124 models really can go on forever. There is a reason they are nicknamed Beirut taxis...

thanks, will definently have a look at the Passat and I'm only looking at petrol due to my mileage
Sold my 98 Passat 1.8T petrol 2 years ago with 200k on the clock. I saw it again today for the first time since, still going strong.
Newer ones are not as bulletproof as they used to be, or does the trim feel as solid. A petrol A4 or A6 may wear better with age. The petrol engines are still good though.0 -

When looking at Vauxhalls, be aware that the warranty only covers the first owner. If you buy pre-reg, or a year old, the warranty is restricted to the balance of 3 years/60,000 miles only.
The Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Fiat, Chevrolet, Ssangyong etc 5/7 year warranties are all transferrable.0 -
