Car for ten years
Options
Hi Folks
I need to buy a new car.
Currently driving 15 yr old A4 which is on its last legs.
I'm looking for a mid size automatic - max budget £10,000 but really don't want to spend all of this. Will do mostly local journeys.
I've been reading all the posts on automatic car recommendations but would like some advice on rust.
I want my next car to last me ideally at least ten years because I hate shopping and really hate spending on cars
I can't decide between getting something about 1yr old (focus / astra type) at the top of my budget with a view to it taking me through ten yrs or spending half that on a 5yr old.
The 5 yr old is my preferred option due to budget but in ten yrs it'll be 15 and could it be a rust bucket?
Are there any cars out there around the 5 yr mark that have a reputation for not rusting and could be a good bet for the next ten years?
Any advice would be much appreciated.:)

Have a look at Kia's. 7 Year warranty.0

Have to be more detailed. 3 or 5 door. How fast? 1.2 or a 2 litre. A estate or 4x4?
I would go for the 5 year old car, some of them can be in great condition and a perfect run around!House deposit £2800/£10000

Thanks for replies - sorry I missed out details.
Will look at Kia - would a five yr old go the distance to 15 years?
4 door / hatchback, min 1.6 max 2.0, just a normal car with 3 seats at back, not a 4x4 or anything like that.
I really want to go for the five year option as well - any recommendations as to the best makes?
One option I've been looking at something like a really high mileage Merc of about 5/6 years - but then figures of 90,000 miles scare me!0 -
sorry also forgot to say I only do about 3000 miles p.a.0

Mercedes would be the one brand I would avoid if rust was what I wanted to avoid. They had some very serious quality issues a few years ago you see 8 to 10 year old Mercs with serious rust where there should be none like round the number plate on the boot.0

Unless you go very old and get a pre-1994. May seem strange but they really were built like tanks and the 1991 diesel I got still feels and tight as a drum0 -
If your only doing 3000 miles per year there is no point in getting a diesel. Why no go for a vw passat, very reliable

I would say the exact opposite. Cars from the late 80's and early 90's were mainly rust buckets, as can be seen (or not seen) by the lack of them on the road today. Sierras, Metros, Escorts, Rovers, Renaults, Peugots, and all Japanese cars literally dissolved away before your eyes.
Proper rustproofing of cars didn't become widespread until about 1996/7."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0
