Nokia is probably the best manufacturer in terms of reception. I live in a very poor coverage area, however this is improved with my Nokia 6100 as opposed to my Samusng E700

check the coverage of each network but strongest overall coverage UK wide is either Vodafone or O2.

    Hope this helps.

thank you guys, my parents live outside GB, and the mobile phone company there has a poor coverage, only small part of the some town, my parents are just within the range of the coverage (1/2 miles away and no coverage), hence my query
I think i'm going for a Nokia with external antenna

Be tempted to go with a GSM900 network - Voda/O2. The phones can transmit at twice the power of GSM1800 (2W vs 1W max), so should result in a better call quality in fringe areas. You could hook up a carkit antenae to the outside & connect it to the phone?

G-Com's Office Antenna (here) is worth a look. Also, if you use an external antenna, it's best to use a phone which actually has an antenna connection. Alot of Siemens models have this feature. Unfortunately many Nokias do not and rely on a 'passive' antenna; that is the external antenna isn't in physical contact with the phone's antenna. This is obviously a weak link which defeats the benefits of using an external antenna.
