Crochet - home made presents

Well the other day I thought I'd teach myself to Crochet so I bought a 99p kit and spent an afternoon and ended up with a dolls hat :) So now I have the bug!
I have ordered 2 books through the book people about crocheting and once they arrive I am going to get proper hooks and buy my materials as I go :)
I am particularly interested in making gifts for round the house, so cushions, baskets, coasters, carrying nets for shopping and maybe when I get really good then some detailed crocheting for table runners etc but I think I'd have to be pretty good to start on those...
Are there other closet crochet'ers out there? What kind of projects have you made and given as gifts that people appreciated?

I personally can't crochet (I've only just mastered knitting anything more complicated than a scarf!) but my Nan could, and I remember, shortly before she unexpetedly died when I was 5, she crocheted me a pink bed jacket which I wore for many years after it stopped fitting just because Nanny made it for me. My mum still has it folded away in tissue paper. Nowdays the same pattern would be a very fashionable cardi!:D
Almost everyone in our family also has at least one of my Nans crocheted multi-coloured blankets on the backs of their sofas for chilly evenings (actually they aren't that warm, but they look nice in a retro sort of way!). She used to start by crocheting a 10 by 10cm ish square then around this would add 2-3 rows in each different colour until either she ran out of wool or until it was big enough to wrap a large car in, which ever came first:D
Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!

lol lillibet - not being funny, but I knit too and fint it's too hard on my wrists - I get inflamed tendons fromtrying to hold up my knitting so canonly knit very small items :(

Crochet is REALLY easy! Well the basic stitches are anyway - which is as far as I have gotten myself :) It really only took a few hours and I had finished the little dolls hat and I'd never crochet'd before in my entire life! And if I can do it ANYONE can :)

Hi, I make mostly baby things at the moment as everyone I know is having babies or Grandchildren. So lots of clothes, blankets, spit cloths etc.

I have made a few things at Christmas for people, like scented sachets, table mats, Snowflake tree decs, stockings, teddies, slippers erm...lots of things that I cannot think of.

This link has loads of ideas which you can use for free for gifts, but you should check copyright on each pattern if you ever want to sell items.

Depression is well Depressing. So I go shopping. Then I realise how much debt I'm in. Then my depression hits low and so I go shopping...

Some of the posters don't mind what you do with the patterns, but it is their intellectual property so some of them are a little obsessed... lol.

I guess I would be if I could design (sigh)

So when you say near ish, roughly where in the country are you?

Hope you don't mind me mentioning it, but it's something that really confused me when I started crocheting, (I'm self taught as well.)

American and UK patterns use the same terms for different stitches. So if you are following a pattern which is done in treble, they may mean dc. There is info on the site about which ones are which. I can never remember, and have to check everytime I do a new pattern!:rotfl:

I love crocheting and did this cushion panel for my niece who was expecting her first baby and attached it to a linen cushion for her nursing chair, She was thrilled
