Can anyone help with a Pet Seller issue?

  • Poor cat...

yes, poor cat, but as harsh as this might sound to some of you, MY SON is more important to me!
  • OP - you mention money in every post.

What about the living creature ?

Should it not come before money - regardless?

What a load of rubbish!! I think you will find that not all of my posts mention money at all, and those that do are in reply to other people posts.

In any case - as someone has already said, this whole site is about money!

My original post was asking for help to see where I stand because I want the paperwork that was promised to me not money!

I will have a much better chance of re-homing her with paperwork than I do without it.
  • Does you son has asthma? If not I'd be tempted to sit it out for a bit. It might even do him some good by desensitising him to cats. You might find he outgrows the allergy. I was very allergic to cats and dogs (still am to an extent, and have asthma) but I am ok with my own.

    No he doesnt have asthma.

Yes, he might out-grow the allergy, then again he might not and to find that out would take a while. Meanwhile we would all become more attached to her, having to part with her later would be even harder for us and her than it is now.

Lots of your posts revolve around what you can and can't afford for your pets. Money isn't everything, but it does play a big part in our lives. Not to mention this is the moneysavingexpert forums, not a simple dog/cat/pet forum.

Yes, it wasn't the best idea to buy a pet from a free ad paper/site, and the poster has found out why. Yes, it's a shame the son is allergic - but they have been trying antihistamines which is more than many would bother doing. OK, if it were me I would forget the £200 and concentrate on finding the kitten a fab new home with someone who didn't care about the papers - but I'm not the OP. Loving animals doesn't mean you have to throw away money where animals are concerned - I shop around for the best price for their boosters, flea treatment, toys, etc., there's no point wasting money just to make a point that you love the pet, OP has been missold a kitten at a different age to stated and without papers they were promised, even aside from OP wanting the money back, I think it's worth making a point to the seller than lying and cheating people out of money has a comeback - and since it definately seems to be about the money to the seller, getting them back financially is a good move IMO.

    Thank you, well said!

Be very careful about this advice.

Asthma is still a killer, a local lad died of an asthma attack not that long ago, he lived in a houseful of cats that the adults refused to rehome even though his asthma was getting worse. Even if you've never had asthma before an allergic reaction can trigger it.

People on here don't tend to take allergies very seriously, but I would be absolutely miserable if I had to live with a cat, and the only antihistamines that work for me are the ones that leave you very drowsy and unable to function.

You can't ask a child to put up with feeling ill for the sake of a pet. Its very sad, but the kitten needs a new home and the OP doesn't need to feel guilty about the reason.

I know asthma is still a killer, even though it shouldn't be. I take allergies seriously as I *still* suffer from bad hayfever (amongst other allergies) every year at nearly 40 and just recently allergies and a horrible cold have really aggravated my asthma. But I do have to wonder if the son is *really* allergic to the cat....sorry OP but it's one of the typical excuse when someone wants to get rid of a pet, and you see it all the time on gumtree and preloved...

So basically, you're accusing her of lying?

    Nice.

Im sorry to hear that you are suffering with asthma, but I find that comment extremely offensive! My son has streaming, itchy, bloodshot eyes, and hes sniffing, sneezing and itching all over - is that a good enough 'excuse'??

And my original post was asking for advice about where I stand with the person I bought the cat from. I wasnt asking for your opinions on my son being allergic or not but seeing as you appear to be an expert and Im just his mother, maybe I can give you the rest of his symptoms so you can make a proper diagnosis?

Im such a terrible person for putting my childs health first - whats the world coming to?!

My thanks to those of you who have given me some very helpful advice.
  • That's what I was thinking too.

Who the hell buys a cat/dog from a site like Preloved?

I really wish sites of that ilk would ban selling pets, pet sellers.

    Well... :0

I got my cat from Preloved. Ironically because the owner's son was allergic. She'd asked the RSPCA (where she got him not long previously) to take him back but they were full and told her to try and rehome him herself until they could find a space. She was asking that someone cover her costs, mainly so he found a home where he was wanted rather than someone who'd just take him because he was free. She did the best thing she could for both her cat and her son, under the circumstances.

Different kettle of fish, I know, but it was a bit of a generalisation. A great many transactions run smoothly and are conducted to the satisfaction of all concerned, including the pet. For every 'bengal', 'maine coon' or even bog-standard kitten for sale on my local site there is more than one genuine re-home - people finding a home for deceased neighbour's pets, people rehoming strays, or people having to give their dearly loved pet away for some understandable reason. Many rescue centres are full, and people are scared that their pet may be put to sleep if a rescue centre cannot rehome them.

    ...anyways...

OP, as others have said you have a contract and the right to expect that 'the goods', nasty as it is to describe a living creature like that, are as described. You have every right to pursue the sellers.

Try not to let it get to you, some people on here who are lucky enough not to suffer from animal allergies seem to have trouble accepting that others do, or that they aren't willing to suffer through them and try to 'adapt'.

You know the truth and that you're making the right decision, that's the main thing.

I can see why people are a bit dubious, child with allergies is a classic excuse. Obviously in some cases this is a genuine reason though. This is also the reason if I had kids and was getting a new animal I would take the child to spend time with the animal or one that a neighbour/friend etc had before commiting.

As for the OP, hope you get something sorted.
