Wasn't the definition changed under Thatcher to Unemployed and receiving benefits...just before a sequence of changes removed entitlement for people still signing on?
It certainly was, if I remember correctly.
If the rich kids sold up, would they be reported in the unemployed, even though they're technically not working?

I have to walk for over an hour to sign on, I'm just really concerned that the JC will enforce weekly signings, or even daily ones like I've heard rumours about?!
According to local staff, they are under the impression that the government wants to move towards 'online' signing, and actually there will be less face-to-face contact between claimant and the DWP, as all new claims and reviews will be completed via the net.
This will enable them to shut more offices, lay off more staff etc., and save money.
It's thought that these changes will be introduced when UC finally makes an appearance.
This gives more info about UC and being unemployed:

(ESA will also be included, but ONLY if it's 'non-contributory'/ 'means tested'.)

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

you have to laugh really dont you,its not as if the jc+ have any real jobs on offer is it?
they plan to make all benefit applications over the internet,is it beyond their imagination to let people sign on online?
Do you really think the jobcentre staff sit in their comfy office and come up with ideas to really annoy job seekers?
We have no control whatsoever over the rules for weekly, daily or fortnightly signing, we have no say on on-line claims or on -line signing, in fact we have no say whatsoever over any process we just do what we are told by higher management and secretary of state and put up with the grief by Jo public, any believe me if the new sanction regime is passed next mnth the grief will increase 10 fold!0 -

thats all as maybe, but the fact remains that jc+ have very few jobs(decent jobs not selling avon)on offfer0 -
yeh like every unemployed person who has to sign on has access to a PC that is connected to the internet. and with the strict parental controls at the library you couldnt access secure servers to sign into a profile, my library blocks access to FB twetter eekbay and banking etc, hell i cant sign into MSE on a library PC.
what about those in rural area's with a bus that only runs into the local JCP town twice a day and just so happens that your a late sign on about 3.30 and the bus leaves at three?
and those who are sick, contagious (flu, measles, shingles, plague etc.) i can imagine it now, you call them up sorry i cant attend my daily sign on ive come down with swine flu and house bound, but your due to sign on in two hours and must attend or lose the money you need to live on!.
sorry silly idea. half of the JCP centers are so small it feel cloterphobic even with just the staff in there never mind daily singers or advisor appointments.0 -
I wish I only had to make the journey to work once a fortnight instead of everyday... you must be exhausted...!!
And people who are looking for work wish they had your job. I have been on JSA before and yes, lying awake at night worrying whether you will be able to afford to eat tomorrow is exhausting. Also the effort involved in looking for work is not just traveling to the job centre, it is constantly searching and applying for jobs and attending interviews. Why whine about traveling to work when so many are out of work? Do you just want to feel superior to someone? Because in this economy you could end up in the same situation!0 -

We cannot force employers to place adverts with us can we?
The jobcentre systems will link with monster database soon. You don't not have to just use the directgov website, there are plenty of others.
There are jobs out there, I admit nit enough for everyone, an advisers job in a job centre is not to find you a job, that why the claimant is claiming job seekers allowance. The adviser role is to assist with your job search and ensure you have taken adequate steps to be entitled to said jobseekers allowance.0
