    Hi,
Managed to get into the settings of my router..
Is there anything that i should be looking for on the router status?
The ip address is different on the internet port and the lan port, so dont know if thats anything to worry about. DHCP is also on.
Mac address is the same apart from the last letters. These are 'E' and F'.

LAN has different ip address from Internet (WAN) is normal, the LAN is just your Local network and the addresses start with 192.168.x.x, the WAN ip is the address allocated by your ISP.

    DHCP on is normal
MAC Address should be different for each device connected, different letter endings may be due to wired/wireless connection.

It's unlikely that the router is hacked, but highly advisable to change default login password and to utilise the WPA security once you've completed the tests.

If you're worried about your wireless network being used by others, check the attached devices and ensure these are all yours. You can also employ MAC address filtering (Trusted PCs only) to restrict access to particular MAC addresses only, although this is not a highly secure method if used on its own.

    Hi ,
Well, thisafternoon i got virginmedia to reset my modem, and i have gained a better speed according to speedtest.net. Somepages however are still hanging a bit and this site took ages to load! My router password was already different and managed to access that ok. As for defragging, i do this regular, and update all my av and spyware daily. Also delete temporary files and history etc.,
It is still bugging me though, things just arent right.
I am now wondering wether it could be the kerio free firewall causing my probs now, as i seem to have eliminated everything else. The trial version ran out the other day, and am now using what it left me with, although i dont understand all the settings, so havent touched anything. Perhaps somebody would recommend me a different free 'easy to use firewall'. I do think the Kerio one is a bit advanced for me to understand!
    Many Thanks
    Lorraine

Yes it could well be the firewall, you shouldn't need it in XP which has a Windows firewall, the Netgear also has firewalling features.

    Other points worth checking:-
1- Make sure the computer is set to acquire ip addresses automatically, and that the router acquires DNS addresses automatically unless you're told otherwise by the ISP.
2- Check the ip address of your computer by entering START -> RUN -> CMD -> IPCONFIG it should be in the format 192.168.x.x
3- Check the network connections on the computer for any old modem settings.

    Edit
Did you have AOL installed on it before? I notice this process is still active "O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe" but not sure what it does.

Sometimes AVG causes the PC to lock up, try restarting it, or even disabling AVG to see if this cures the problem.

    Hi,
AOL was preinstalled on this pc when we bought it, but i dont know what it does....should i disable this....if so how please? I know i have seen it somewhere in my settings but cannot remember how to disable it.

I also thought the windows xp firewall was rubbish, thats why i changed to kerio, although since using kerio i havent had 1 virus or trojan like before with xp firewall.

I am now also having trouble etting windows updates now, coming up with an error code 0x80245003 and have sent microsoft an email regarding that issue.
My day is getting worse! I did a system restore earlier, back to early march when i had trojans and pc was working fine,it was all fixed.
But obviously i still have some issues to deal with!
Thanks again for your help and advice
    cheers

Uninstall it using Start - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.

    Hi and Thanks again,
Yes i have removed the whole program for AOL...derrr...yes i am stupid of not thinking to do that sooner. Will see if that makes a difference, may have been conflicting with other programs.
Just need to sort the windows update issue out now.
    Many Thanks

remove your sw firewall for now and try/reboot the pc again.
you can install a better and free, firewall, if required later.
    Get some gorm.
