I'm reluctant to trust all services from one supplier, and my broadband is only about 2.5Mb/s and I don't want TV etc so I'm a pretty basic user.
I've had broadband from Virgin for some years and they are pretty reliable here (but have been poor recently), but expensive, so I'm going to Plusnet next week.
I looked at phone call prices for Virgin and they are very high, so I used Tesco for a time but theu got expensive too, so then changed to BT recently and it's fine.0 -
ADSL broadband that comes down a BT telephone line is exchange dependent. Some offer better facilities than others.
Your first step would be go onto the Samknows exchange search website and check. In particular see which LLU operators are present.
If you have Virgin and no BT line you would have to have one installed. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
You could try out either of these two phone services ...

http://www.18185.co.uk/
Much cheaper than Virgin , although you still need the phone line!
I used to use 18866 for calls , but have gone mobile exclusively , I still have a package of 3 services from Virgin , but don't actually use the phone or the TV (free with the phone) but I do still get a bundle saving for having all 3 from them!0 -
I have been with these https://www.yourcalls.net for almost 3 years now and my biggest payment was £27 a month. That is all UK calls 24/7, Line Rental, Broadband and discounted calls to Mobiles. I can access details of all calls anytime - number, duration, cost etc. That has been very useful on more than one occasion. There is also a "Golden Destination" number which is absolutely free wherever in the world. 10GB of downloads, anything over that is charged at £0.49p per GB.
My last bill, and this is typical, was £23. They are based in Sussex and Tech Support is great: clear, English voices, knowleadgeable technicians who are patient and courteous. I don't understand why they are not more popular.
My best download speed is around 2.6 Mb, by the way. I am in rural lincolnshire.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Whilst you are still with Virgin, you could make immediate savings on your calls by using another calls provider (like you previously did with First Telecom).
Pikeyp has already mentioned 1899 and 18185 which offer UK calls at 1p per min plus a 5p connection fee and mobiles are 6p/min (weekend) and 10p/min (weekday) plus 5p connection.
For landline calls, you might want to try Telesave - http://www.telesave.co.uk/athome/national.htm - only 1p/min off-peak calls and 1.5p/min peak time calls. No connection fee (just a 4p min charge per call).
For mobiles, you might want to try Savacall - only 4p/min to mobiles.
If you end up sticking with Virgin, then Virgin Line Rental Saver may be something that can reduce your line rental down to £10/month equivalent.
Haggle with Virgin for a broadband/phone deal (no TV) and then you've got a figure to compare with ADSL options. If you do stick with Virgin, you still never need to put a chargeable phone call their way!0
