worming cat

Options
how can i get my cat to take a worming tablet , i've used all the normal tricks of crushing it up with various fave food , but she won't have any of it , prefering to go all day without food . the prospect of forcing it down is a non starter as she goes ballistic when i put flea stuff on the neck , so is there a liquid wormer i can put on the neck or is the tablet route the only option

Pick the cat up and cradle in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into it, allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind the sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
Retrieve cat from bedroom and throw soggy pill away. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call partner in from garden. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get partner to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.
Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from the foil wrap. Make note to buy a new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered 'Dolton' figurines from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. Wrap cat in large towel and get partner to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.
Check label to make sure pills not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply plaster to partners forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap. Retrieve cat from neighbours shed and get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon and flick pill down throat with elastic band.
Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom. Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road and apologise to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid the cat. Take last pill from foil wrap. Tie cats front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed and pry cat's mouth open with a small spanner. Push pill into mouth followed by a large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour a pint of water down throat to wash down pill.
Get partner to drive you to the Emergency Room and sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearms and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call at furniture shop on way home to order new table.
Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat. Ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

Or call JoJo - she gave tablets to my 4 cats about a week or so ago and none of them even noticed.....

I am useless at it, so sorry - no sensible advice ;)
  • Don't feed her for 24 hours and then give her a small spoonful of pate style food with the tablet crushed up in it and thoroughly mashed in.

I'm not sure whether you can use a liquid or not as your post isn't clear, but you could use Advocate which covers both fleas and worms, but it doesn't treat tapeworm so you'd have to use a worming tablet every few months anyway.

Seem to work but unfortunately both of mine are just as bad to try to get the stuff on (impossible to do by 1 person as you need to part the hair on the back of the next & get on the skin) as a pill down the throat:eek: - so it's still a 2 man job and one that happens when my BF comes! (she has 6 of her own &, believe me, doesn't take any notice of the hissy fits at all!)

Have you actually tried opening the mouth, putting the tablet at the back of the throat and massaging until swallowed?

The reason I ask is that I have 5 cats, 2 big moggy boys, 2 naughty Bengals and a little tabby Friday cat who is the most affectionate and kind cat you could ever come across.

The moggies and Bengals are absolutely fine to give tablets to... Friday on the other hand uses every trick in the book to not take it, including pretending to swallow it and then spitting it out a few moments later :rotfl:

So what I'm saying is you don't know if you don't try ;)
  • Friday fancy a trip up here to do mine?

Honestly, big cat is the softest lump but he still turns into a horrid monster (think big black panther with horrible green glaring eyes and claws the length of your arm with teeth bigger than a dogs!) ..... as for wee cat - she's a viscous monster at the best of times :rotfl:and will take a swipe at you for just walking past her in the hall (but a loveable and affectionate - when she wants to be - one too;))

  • One of our cats really hates taking tablets. REALLY hates them. I find the easiest way to deal with it is to do it this way.
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

There are spot on wormers such as Profender, IIRC this also covers tapeworm.

Are there any palatable worming tablets?

I can't remember what we used to give my old boy to worm him.

When we had to give him tablets (he was semi-feral, massively strong, with paws like shovels and claws that never retracted fully), we used to drop an old towel (his own, used for drying him off when he came home wet) over him, pick him up, flip him on his back, wrap the towel tightly round him enclosing his paws and I would sit on the bottom step of the stairs and OH would drop the pill into his mouth.

It was a very practised process and had to be slick.
