my preference is for avast of mse, but it's not overly important, especially relating to your problem.

It doesn't work doesn't mean anything, apart from your expect it to do X, and it doesn't meet your expectation, for someone to help, you have to say what you are doing, what file or media you are trying to play, what you click on to play it, what happens on screen etc. Using the word lose makes it even more confusing.

You click on vlc, a vlc screen should come up, does it? If so, then what happens, what exactly do you click on, and what happens on screen at each stage.

OK, sorry. I'll explain what happens.

I right click on the media video that's in my documents folder and it states "open with"; the options of mwp or vlc or real player come up and I always choose vlc because I prefer it, so I click on vlc and the screen comes up and (when it's allowing me to watch the video's) it starts playing the video.

Now, when it doesn't work, what happens is, that I go all through the above and then instead of the video starting to play, a box comes up with vlc unable to play this media. I know it's not just that video, because it happens to all of them. I also know it's not that video because I tried it out in mwp and real player and they work on there.

So, I uninstall vlc and reinstall and then it's all fine and I go through what I've said above and it plays the video/file.

Is that a bit clearer? I'm sorry about this and thank you for your patience. :o

One media player may be able to play a file, that another media player can't. This can be due to the type of file, or the codec used when compressing the file.

Are you absolutely sure that the file you are trying to play works after reinstalling vlc, in all cases?

    Vlc does have some bugs.

The running glary etc confuses the issue, just avoid cleaners for a while, and come back when it happens again

Absolutely 100% sure - I try it with the same one just to see if it is that file and then just to be sure, I play others that didn't play.

I've never ever had any problem with playing anything on VLC. It's always played everything i have, hence why I prefer to use that rather than the others I have on my computer.

OK, i will stop cleaning for a while and come back when it happens again.

    Thanks for all your help.

you can set vlc to be the default player for a particular filetype, if you want to skip the right click choose step.
