Bye Bye Standby

why do appliances need a standby mode< either they are on or off0

I don't understand why people leave things on standby
All that needs to be left on is the fridge/freezer  It's just a waste of money leaving them on and it's highly dangerous. 0 -
As I said before its not always simply to get down on ones hands and kneels and switch off at mains, example. TV could be in a corner on a cabinet you have to reach over TV and under it to turn tv off thats what I found in my last house, one day the tv would fall over if I did that every day. Also some people have difficulty bending and reaching, so a remote is much easier for them.
My TV a new ish one has only two options at main switch, ON or Standby.Yes its a really pain thank Samsung wonderful idea, dismiss the off switch entirely.
I dont have the problem of getting to tv now since moving as I do this but tbh I occasionally do forget and I rather have a device that can do this for me0 -
Before you poopoo the whole idea, do you have any proof this is just a con?
no scientific evidence myself but... how much is the average leccy bill a month? £40? so over 12 months that's £480, deduct the £70 and that leaves you a £410 bill a year. If you turned everything else off standby when you're not using it, fridge, freezer, oven (got a clock on it) plug sockets powering a 4way bar (must use some electricity to light the LED), alarm clock etc, do you think you'd have a yearly bill of around £100 to compensate you turning everything off?
I turn my downstairs tv off at the socket as there's 6 things plugged into it. If i'm not in it's switched off but i leave the bedroom tv on standby. I'd turn it off but watch tv before going to sleep and am usually too tired to get up and turn it off. I'd unplug it but that's mean unplugging the alarm clock as well.0 -

1. I know the old style battery chargers (heavy ones) did you use quite a bit of energy on standby. Thus the amount of energy to turn fossil fuels (coal oil) into electricity then to the charger would amount in more than the gas being burnt as gas has a very low carbon count. New style changer are more energy efficient as the only 'turn on' when the phone is plugged in
solar panels are approx 4% efficient on a good day. but its all down to the environment you live in and the cost of the equipment..if you think its good to be 'green' then go out and buy them..just don expect to recouperate the cost soonSmile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -

Totally agree - but the stupid statement made yesterday about wind turbines and solar panels was just completely and utterly UNTRUE ! and it could influence a lot of people into spending £thousands on this type equipment when they would be a lot better off buying a £100 worth of glass fibre lagging for their loft.0 -

Agreed 100%, and while Blair etc. continue to run around in gas guzzlers, why should us plebs bother.:rolleyes:0 -
I have a 5 year old Philips crt tv. I checked the manual & leaving it on standby 20 hours a day uses about £10/year in electricity.
Sometimes I really think these magazine articles completely exaggerate!
Best to check your instruction manual if you want to work out the real cost rather than read "generic article" which are probably based on 20 year old appliances!0 -
