Quit job due to being underpaid, claim JSA?

My company I worked for was underpaying me in some weeks, even 1 week I didn't get paid at all.
I decided to quit because I couldn't afford to commute to work!
I went to Job Centre and they said I can't claim JSA because I quit my job. What's the point going to a job if you get underpaid!
Anyway, Job Centre said they would look into it but I would have to wait 6 months until I can go back on job seekers.
A couple months later of hassling them, the company I left paid me the remaining money they owed me.
Job seekers still said I had to wait until 6 months is over to claim JSA. Is this true or are they pulling a fast one on me?

If you resign from a job your JSA claim can be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks.0

If you can show good reason, you can get JSA for quitting a job. Even if you are sanctioned, you can apply for a hardship sum.
So they've obviously not told you of the complete picture and your options.
There's a slogan on one posters' signature which says something like 'never define a conspiracy from what happens through incompetence'.0 -

Hmmm. Why did you quit rather than sort it out when you were there? Might have been worth finding out the consequences of doing so before you did.
Not being funny but I bet the job centre have heard a multitude of reasons as to why people quit their jobs. The rule is you cant get JSA if you quit so thats that.0 -
There were 3 other people who quit because they didn't get paid and it was never sorted.
I did talk to management and they told me it was an accounting issue. Yet I still continued to get underpaid.
The job centre were aware of the company underpaying due to the amount of other people being underpaid.
I quit because I could not afford the travel cost to go to work. I would rather be claiming JSA where I can actually get money to pay for bills and food than be underpaid/ not paid at all.0 -

Or any one or more of a dozen explanations. Perhaps 'possibly' might have been a better word than 'obviously'; particularly in view of your last bit.0 -

Still think quitting is a rather dull way to do things though, especially as you should have known you wouldnt get JSA.
Were you in a union?0 -

I find it hard to believe that you won't get JSA for leaving a job where they are not paying you. That's called constructive dismissal, not quitting.0 -

Underpaid isn't the same as not being paid at all.0 -
The not bEing paid is a red herring to an extent, when giving your resins for leaving you should concentrate on the resultant inability to get to work0

True enough. If employer were underpaying you and in breach of the employment contract then it could be classed as constructive dismissal I guess.
But, as I've said, quitting without finding out the consequences was a bad idea.0
