  • Ah I feel for you. I'm ex-CS and hated it towards the end. I was lucky enough to escape 3.5yrs ago and now love my current job :).

Job search - do you know what you want to do? What industry etc? Or will anything do for now?

Sign up for job alerts from companies or job websites, and then you get alerts daily/weekly about new jobs and saves you searching as such (although I still recommend searching).

Are there any secondment opportunities in the CS that you could apply for? I did this twice and it lead me to my current job - although I would suspect things have changed since.

Grab any opportunity to train, whether it's a training course in work or e-learning etc. College course in evenings etc.

If you are determined enough you wil find a better job, but you do need to have tough skin as the job market is tough right now.

    Good luck

Well, I handed in my notice today. Being screamed at for 'not taking responsibility for my own paperwork' was the last straw. The tension in the office is abysmal and my other colleague is off sick with stress leaving me to face the new 'all angry all the time' line manager on my own.

I feel much better, and I have some savings to keep me afloat for a short while. Don't get me wrong, I have made a silly move and I know it but for the first time in a long while I'm not sitting here fretting about what I'm going to face tomorrow, wondering what I will be pulled up on next, or crying myself to sleep.

Here's hoping I can make it into the next year...

Sort of know how you feel. My job is boring me to death, I'm capable of much more but no one wants to give me the chance. My previous contract I was on the entry level, but helped out with other things higher up, so I asked for the next batch of work if I could do that job, as the person who did that job has gone onto other things. Some people said I am capable of doing it, unfortunately not the ones who give jobs out and heard back today that they want me back in the same role as before!!

I refused it, as I need to move up. Just have to endure the next 5 weeks of my current contract!

I bet it feels like a relief!

I'm one of lifes useless people, too! I've been in the situation you described a number of times. I too always tried to stick it out for a while, but I remember the feeling of relief when I eventually walked out. It washed over me in an awesome wave.

I'm actually sort of if that situation now and have been whilst in my current job for the last 15 months or so (albeit not quite as bad as some previous jobs in terms of sickness/anxiety everyday before work etc). All I think of every morning is how I can't wait for the weekend to arrive

I know that if I quit though, i'll be unemployed for ages due to me being, basically, an idiot!

Anyway, good luck. I hope you find something better

Hope that you find another job soon - one that you will enjoy and will be less stressful :grouphug:
  • I can relate! Been working in Local Government for 5 years; 12 months in present role and I despise it. I would walk out tomorrow if I didn't have debts and the OH didn't have CSA to pay. My 12 month contract is up soon and rather than them extending it I'm praying for voluntary redundancy.
  • There will be something for you, it just may be in another industry. I originally trained as a primary school teacher for 4 years (well it was nearly 5 as I had to defer a year due to it, then had to extend placement as I broke my ankle - didn't have much luck) and then failed final placement and didn't want to do it anymore as i'd had enough of battling. So travelled a bit, worked a lot during the next 10 months and then applied for a support worker job and have been here just over a year. It isn't the best paid job but is very rewarding, quite easy going as the people we support just need support for the basic things like banking and the like, and is really enjoyable. It has its days (like all jobs), I work most weekends so it does have its down sides but over the 9 years of working i've done many many fields of work and it is the one I have enjoyed the most, it is just trying to find what you are good at and enjoy as you need to find something you enjoy as we all spend so much time working.

Can i ask those who have commented, what sort of jobs are involved when you say 'local government'? What sort of work is it? Not that i'd go for it based on these comments :rotfl: but i'm genuinely interested to know.

Plus i told my sister about a job i saw advertised, something to do with working with the local MP and she seemed interested but i might steer her away from it now
  • Hi Brallaqueen

I can relate, leaving a job is a stressful thing to do. I did it too.

It's very hard after you leave a job, and do not have a job to go too. It's like a wave of panic over you, thinking omg what do i do now.But if a job is not right for you why stay there and feel this stress, it's unfair.
It can cause more damage than good.

You will make it to the next year if you keep positive and think you will get another job, and maybe a job much better where you feel more comfortable.

I know its wrong to quit a job nowadays, without another job to go too, but in some case's it's better to do this and try and start again.. maybe easier said than done.

If your planning on claiming JSA, you have the right to claim, but you may be sanctioned like i was, for leaving work voluntary for 6 weeks.

Once you start looking ahead of yourself, rather than behind, it does get easier, because whats ahead can be a opportunity that can put you into a better work place.

Just think they will miss you more, than you'll going to miss them.

My saying is a job is not going to worry for you, so why worry for them.

Just because a job and someone's says your not good, that dont mean your worthless and i can guarantee the person who shouted at you is not perfect either.

It's hard to be happy when everything is bleak, but you will feel better soon in a few weeks, just keep applying for jobs.

We all cant be unemployed forever. If you know inside your doing your best then no one can say your not trying.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I'm still in bits though, now just in bits because I don't have a job. It took me a long time to find this one even as much as I hate it.

I work in a HEI. We've gone through some pretty intense restructuring, which made everyone crazy (not just me!), and things only seem to be getting worse.

I've always been erratic but this takes the cake even for me. I've been up all night throwing up, crying and hugging my cat. I just don't know what to do for the best now. Will I ever get another job? What am I doing, relying on my mum's savings to get through the next 10 months? I don't have much of my own (see sig). If I don't get a job I'll lose my home, my cat will suffer and I'll be back to square one.
