Using iPhone on orange - settings & the like?

I'm currently on o2. I get a brilliant signal at work, both 2G & 3G & i'm using an iPhone 3GS, however i get zero signal at home, 2G & 3G. I have to position it carefully in a corner of the living room window to get a single bar. In town is reasonably good both 2G & 3G.
So i swapped to Vodafone last October time.
At home i suddenly had full 2G signal, but no 3G. However at work, i had 1 bar for 2G & naff all for 3G. I couldn't use my phone for internet browsing at all.
So i used the full £10 top up & then about 3 weeks after switching to Vodafone & AFTER i finally had enough & decided to ditch them & revert back to o2, they finally decided to text (or it could've been email, i can't remember) me & tell me that i needed to tweak my settings to get online.
Thanks for that!
I've heard decent things about the Orange/T-Mobile partnership & looking at their coverage checker, i should get a good 2G & 3G signal at both home & work, so it's win-win if that turns out to be the case.
I've bought myself a PAYG SIM before i sign up to any contract, just to test it out.
Question here is - do i need to meddle with any settings to enable me to browse the web? I believe it's a "panther" sim i've bought.
SIM should be with me in the coming days, so i figured i'd ask beforehand.

if you sync the iPhone with iTunes then the settings should be updated automatically, or they will be updated from the actual sim when you put it in the phone.0

Then why in that case could i not get on the internet when i went with Vodafone when the area was supposed to get a decent signal?0
