Kitchen Fitter Broke My TV :(

I live in a Housing Association property and around 2 weeks ago the Housing Association arranged for a Kitchen Fitter from a building contractor to install a new kitchen in the house.

In the course of the installation wet plaster was dropped on a live spur in the kitchen tripping the electrics. The Kitchen Fitter attempted to turn the electric on a few times but it tripped again immediately. When the electric eventually stayed on OK I couldn't turn my TV on - it was on when the electrics were tripped!

The building contractor company asked for me to arrange a TV engineer to investigate (they are paying) and he found that the power supply had blown and the screen had also been damaged meaning it was beyond repair - this was most likely caused by turning the electric off and on repeatedly. They have said they are looking for a "like for like" replacement under their insurance but I have some concerns...

My original TVs RRP was £1,700 around 6 years ago and it's discontinued now - It's a 42" LG Plasma TV and one of the main features we use on it is "picture-in-picture" (PiP) where you can view two "channels" at once (e.g. the kids can play a games console whilst we watch the telly!)... that's why I bought it. But PiP is not widely available anymore - LG and Panasonic don't do it any more... Samsung do but they don't have a 42" plasma (only a 51" - and this doesn't have PiP!)... I believe some Samsung LED TVs do have it but they don't do a 42" in those either (only a 40" or a 46")

I don't want a smaller TV and I don't want a TV without PiP.
What should I expect as "like for like"? Do I have any grounds on not accepting their "like for like" replacement if it doesn't meet my expectations?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section... I know it's a lot to read too!

Either a 6 year old 42 inch plasma TV
    or
a cash payment which will be the cost of obtaining a 6 year old 42 inch plasma TV, which you most likely would use towards buying a new one from a retailer of your choice.

...but not £1700, because that is not the cost of an equivalent TV now.

I was too polite to say that ;)

At best about £400 I'd say.
  • Thanks for all your comments ... That model looks interesting krisdorey!!! I'm not sure that PiP on that model actually does split screen like my old one though - it looks like it puts a small(er) screen in a chosen corner. I'm hoping that I can get back to the same situation before this happened (at least).

How do you manage to concentrate on what is happening on the main part of the screen when the little [STRIKE]perishers[/STRIKE] darlings are knocking ten bells of the proverbrial out of some unsuspecting digital character?

    Cheers

I guess after a few years you just get used to it! :)
I find it's much better them "knocking ten bells of the proverbrial out of some unsuspecting digital character" than each other.

If you can spend nearly £2k on a TV, why are you in a Housing Association property.
