I can't believe how much your kids get!! I work and don't have 150.00 to myself!! My 12 yr old has a basic phone and and anything above normal chores she does, she can earn some extra money. Money has to be earnt, not just handed out. Sorry rant over.0

My 13 year old is on an allowance where she buys everything herself. It barely covers all her activities, bus fares, music lessons etc. She gets £150 but I would take it away if she stopped doing chores or stayed out late. However she can disappear at 12 on a Saturday morning and not arrive home until 8 at night. I trust her to be out on her own, so I would not worry about him being out a lot, only if it was very late.
Where does a 13 yr old go for 8 hrs? 13 yr olds are still kids and get murdered by strangers?? Sorry but I am amazed!!0

I'd stick with what you're giving him to be honest and just be stricter on him having to inform you as to where he is and what time he'll be home.
He needs to learn to budget, why not explain that he's getting this money but will have to pay for driving lessons himself in two years and that working for extra at his grandparents' won't always be an option when he needs money (unlike a proper job, it's not exactly reliable income). From what I remember, learning to drive was a big thing for the boys (many of whom moved from bikes to cars as a hobby), maybe explain how much each lesson costs and start him saving now.
Also, who cares about him buying junk food? He's a teenager, I barely looked at a vegetable until about the age of 21 when I left university, I didn't die and was probably healthier than I am now. Better to let him buy it when he wants than be one of those kids who develops an unhealthy relationship with it when he's out of your sight.0

Adult men get murdered by strangers, adult women get murdered by strangers, pets get murdered by strangers......what exactly is your point here?0

My 13 year old usually takes her guitar with her and meets up with friends to practice music, write songs and sings, if the weather is nice they will go to the local bandstand or the park to do this. They get caught up in their hobby and the time just flies past, in between times they will walk into town to buy snacks at Asda or go to a cafe. They arrive at different people's houses and sometimes this will be my house, I know who she is with and trust her.
It is rare for kids to be murdered, raped, assaulted or kidnapped outside their own homes unless of course they are involved in gang type behaviour and putting themselves at risk.
I have no real problem with people who are not prepared to give 13 year olds the type of freedom we enjoyed and our parents enjoyed, that is for them to decide but please don't have a "go" at parents like me who allow our kids to explore, express, manage risks and generally learn to be independant confidence adults.0

My point is kids go missing and are murdered. A 13 yr old child is not old enough to be out for 8 hrs, my view and others will have theirs.0

when I was 13, I stayed out all day on a Saturday, we used to go into town, hang around and then go to one of my friends houses! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Kids get murdered within their own home! As a 41 yr old, I had freedom as a child but my mother knew where I was at all times and at 13 home by 7pm. England is not a safe place and as parents we have a responsibility to our children's safety.0

I am sure you know what is best for YOUR child, however my child is more than capable of keeping herself occupied and safe for 8 hours and more. I have chosen not to judge your child-rearing methods which I am sure I would not agree with and would like to point out that I did not invite you to comment on mine.0
