Wireless USB adapter Problem

Problem

Frequent break in WiFi internet access on desk top PC upstairs in spare bedroom

Set-Up

I've got a LAPTONE N150 Wireless USB Adapter plugged into the desktop PC upstairs. The router is plugged into the phone point downstairs (the only point in the house) and a BT approved ADSL filter is fitted. Desktop is about 6 years old.

I use a Samsung netbook downstairs on WiFi, never cabled, and internet is fine on that.

It's a small house and the router is at the bottom of the stairs, desktop at the top of the stairs - no thick walls in between.

SO can anyone tell me what the problem is and what I can do to fix it please ?

Thanks

Miss H

Make sure there is nothing interfering with the wireless signal, cordless phone base stations etc.. Download and run inSSIDer to see if their are any interfering signals from neighbours wifi and if there is change the channel.
Never heard of the particular adapter, is it on an extension lead or plugged straight in the back. I'd use a pair of home-plugs instead of wireless for a desktop PC.
Good idea to install smoke detectors, wedding dresses can be very flammable.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

don't worry it's very old, I'm just a sentimental old bird.
  • oops, took my eye off this thread. I'm waiting for nephew to pop round and help with penrhyn's suggestions - for which many thanks.

In the meantime (while I wait for him to find a slot in his diary for me) does anyone else have some ideas or can recommend a diff wi-fi adapter ?

    Thanks

  • My guess is that your wireless adapter isn't up to it, the range that is. I had similar problems with PCI adapters and tried several but in the end had to move the router (easier than moving the PC). Suggest you try this.

I have great expectations that you would be better using a pair of Homeplugs.

The use your ring mains wiring to carry the broadband signals around te house. So one plugged in near your router, one near your laptop. Ethernet cables link socket to device. A pair are needed.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

We are having real problem with the Internet dropping out at at the moment and I am thinking it is the router power supply so managed to source a new one for £1.18 (plus £4.95 p&p next day delivery), so if this is not the issue then no great loss, if it is then cheaper than a new router
