Yes, I know that but presumably if they have dropped the HB by £80 he/she must be getting one hell of a lot of HB to start with.

    Maybe I should have said

If you are already in employment is there any reason why you cant get more hours/an extra job.

Of course! How clever! Why doesn't the OP walk out of the house, and straight into another job?
Oh yes, because that's not always easy to do.
Please stop assuming that people receiving benefits must all be in some way lazy or workshy. There are many circumstances that you simply don't know, so I'd recommend making only comments that can be useful to the OP, or else read on to the next post.

No but as far as I know being in receipt of benefits doesn't affect the ability to plan ahead. OP should have looked into the impact of one child going to uni when she first mentioned it. She could then have done something accordingly rather than acting like the whole thing is coming out if the blue unfairly.
  • I think some of the posters on here are forgetting that the appeal judges in the cases in the links have all agread that it is not acceptable for people to loose a portion of their housing bennefit because a child is at university.
  • I lost my CB/CT/WT and maintenance payments and also got made redundant a few months before ds started uni :( . I was lucky and found another job but only p/t, its difficult but just have to get on with it and cut back drastically on everything.

Not read the whole thread so sorry if this hase been mentioned before.
But our DD started Uni last yr, our council accepted a letter from her Uni ( they handed them out w/o asking so presumed lots of council etc want them?) Just states she's registered and date of start and end of course.
My council then put her in a different class, w/o the letter she's a non dependant and therefore our HB is reduced ( think it was reduced by £7 a wk) . With the letter, her deductions are £0.00

BTW when she registered for 2 yr this week she was given another letter.

Just dug the new one out and it is titled Council tax exemption certificate.

Gives her name, dob, says she's FT student and the course she is studying.
Says course commenced Sept 11 and expected completion dat is Jul 2015

Signed and stamped by the Uni

You need to ask your DD to get one of these letters from the Uni

I am really not sure why people aren't stll getting HB help when their child is away at Uni. Or even if the child is studying at home.

We are a family of six, DD being the eldest child. Three boys all still in school. OH works FT I dont work.
We recieve part HB and the amount DID NOT change when DD when for Uni, as I rec'd and presented the exemption cert I previously mentioned. Nothing changed. ( apart from loss of some of my tax credits and some of my CB which I knew was coming)

The exemption cert is only for council tax purposes, not housing benefit.
