Vodafone - Need help

Hi,

I lost my phone on Saturday 16th (HTC Sensation XL). I called Vodafone within the hour and had the phone and sim card blocked.

I called back yesterday to request a replacement sim and handset and was told "You're not insured, we'll send you a replacement sim but that's it".

I pay £46 a month currently, and wrongly assumed that this covered insurance aswell, which it didn't. So now I'm left paying £46 a month for a sim card. I have around 12 months left to go on my contract so an early upgrade isn't an option.

I've also checked my contents insurance, but that doesn't cover mobiles.

Is there anything I can do? Or is it just a case of buying a super cheap handset and seeing out the rest of my contract?

The attitude of their customer service representatives is awful.

Insurance is an optional extra which for some phones (i especially) can be as high as about £12pm on top of your phone tariff. They propably dont give it by default because of all of the issues of miselling so you have to say yes when they ask or ask for it.

What plan are you on thats £46pm?

  • I've managed to finally unlock my old iPhone 3gs and now have that working with my replacement sim. I'm missing Android and the big screen though :D

My plan is 1200 minutes, unlimited texts and 750mb data. It was quite pricey as I opted for and early, early upgrade.

I still plan on leaving Vodafone once this contract is up though. Many thanks for the replies.
  • Any other network would be the same - if they just handed out a new phone everyone would be 'losing' their handset.

Assuming you are a normal consumer customer:

12 months left @ £46pm (£38.33 ex vat), standard up to 90 day early upgrade, and usual waiver of 3 months due to broken phone.

You could pay 6 months of your existing contract, VAT waived, and 3 months dropped on top, as a gesture from Voda to remain.

This I would find fair, and quite likely, a lot more than most other companies would do, in the scenario.

Although, I already foresee you saying, well why should I pay to stay with Vodafone?

Well there is the possibility of paying nothing, although any new contract you enter, would be added on to your existing, ie an 18m becomes 30m (18+ remaining 12)

Although this would take quite a bit of negotiating, but I have seen it done before, quite a few times.
  • Thanks for the reply Micky, I'll give that a shot :)
