it is totally unreasonable for a cc co or a bank to offer to lend you £X and then after you have taken them up on that offer for them to suddenly turn round and say, err we have changed our minds now and we are going to charge you extra for that.
It does happen, and far to often, so in this case I think it's perfectly reasonable to reclaim those charges.0 -
Well done for having a right rant at them. It does feel so much better afterwards.
I have always had problems with them.
I currently pay them £43.31 per month on repayment plan. After 6 months they said they were reviewing the situation. Dont pay anything until you have returned the SOA to us. Did it. They contact me about a week later. Where is your SOA. I sent it. Not received here. Ok, i'll send a copy recorded. Sent it. 4 days later - where is your SOA. I sent it. No you didnt. I did - I have a receipt and it says online its been signed for at your office.
Ok then, we dont have it so just pay what you normally pay. Ok, thats what I said at the start, take it on debit card. Its taken. 3 days later - as you did not pay ontime we are now passing your account to our collectors. Rang them. Argued. Ok - we agree it was unfortunate this month.
6 months later - review of account. Just Ditto the above - it all happened again.
Absolute toss pots. Sorry for jumbled post. Just so pathetic MBNA.Total Debt now £22,525.07 Start Debt £32,732.36

OMG thats awful...so glad I am going to get rid of them...out of all my creditors they are by far the worst and most inflexible!!!
Hope you get it sorted...think I am lucky to be getting out!
Thank god I have a darling partner who is so much better with money!!!:j :j :j

I cant wait to get away from them. In 3 months time I should have reduced my creditors from 9 to 5. MBNA will then be the one with the lowest amount owed, and the priority to be paid off first.
I have 6 times as much owed to Barclays and they are brilliant and helpful with my problems.
MBNA are just absolutely useless.
I dont blame them for my debt, but do for my headaches!!Total Debt now £22,525.07 Start Debt £32,732.36

Oh my god, can't believe they would put the limit down to make you be over your limit. Barclaycard tried to do this to me (£520 limit - i was at £450 - and they sent me a letter saying that they were putting limit to £260) - not on the same level financially but same type of thing. I phoned them and said that they were doing it to make me over limit etc and had a rant. They agreed and said they would wait till i was under £260 and then put it down. That was a month ago and have now paid it off and cancelled it on the phone (it took a while after they tried to say what a great and valued customer i was and tried to offer me more credit). I have also got an MBNA (Abbey) credit card and after hearing this, will be paying it off asap. Thanks for the warning.

Feel slightly annoyed by your response...do it yourself...is it not courtesy to advise customer that you are lowering the credit limit so that said customer is prepared for it....Perhaps not in your world...once again a person who would rather pass judgement...I got myself to 6800 no1 else...it didn't happen just one day...unfortunately loads of misguided purchases and then only paying minimum amounts...
This site is for support and advice, not judgement
Sharon
My world is the same as your world topsy, and I wasn't meaning to be judgmental but was commenting on what you yourself had said, and have now re-iterated in saying you made some misguided purchases. Yeah I have too, not anyone else's fault though is it.
I think to expect courtesy from the credit providers is somewhat naive, particularly in the current climate of OFT investigations and recalimed charges, but I was genuinely surprised that a CC, and particularly MBNA who are in my experience the most flexible would do what you - and now others here have said. That is effectively some kind of, um, entrapment, and is shocking.
No doubt practises are changing though. To give you an example of what happened to me recently I cleared the balance on my Morgan Stanley a/c in order to use the available £6k to BT at some kind of a decent rate. 'No', they said. Not at a decent rate, not at any rate. So, £6k available and (effectively) nothing to be done with it.
As for support and advice, from your original post sounds to me like you do just fine by yourself
Sorry for the annoyance.

I have been on a DMP since Nov 06 and all creditors except MBNA have agreed to my offer. Keep phoning/writing asking for more each month. Have asked me to sell my house, borrow from friends & family etc etc. The last phone call was total stalemate. We want more, I cannot pay you more, what happens now.... well, keep us informed, will phone again soon.
I much prefer the Amex approach, at the first phone call they spelled out to me exactly how many days each stage took & after 60 days, as promised, they passed the debt to a DCA, who accepted offer payment immediately.Proud to be dealing with my debts :j

thanks for the reply back 'do it yourself.'..I understand where you are coming from now but as you can see from the many posts I am not the only one with probs with them. I think if you compare them to my other creditors they are the least flexible...Am EX and Barclaycard are fantastic in this area! (I may be told that is not so for all though)
On a positive note I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to tell them where to stick it when I clear of the final few pounds next month (once again thank you nana....RIP:A :A :A )
Good luck everyone else with MBNA

I transferred a huge balance from MBNA to a 0% card last year. I wanted to continue using the MBNA card for purchases though, because I get airmiles from it. I set up a DD to make payment in full every month on my purchases. The very next month MBNA wrote to tell me they were changing the date my monthly payment was due, and the money would be debited from my account 10 days earlier - moving it to the wrong side of payday! I truly believe they were hoping to make me default on a payment so that they could make money from me by another means, or cause me to have an unauthorised OD at my bank. As it happens, it has backfired on them bigtime as I was able to cover the payment, and they don't make a penny out of me these days.
