  • Lidl and possible other places on occation sell biodegradable bin liners, not cheap tho. Maybe the bin liner factorys should make all black bin liners/ plastic bags biodegradable and resonably priced or supplied by council like black bags used to be.

  • I have several friends who are infant school teachers and they are always desperate for plastic bags as they get used to take 'wet pants/knickers' home in.

As I work in a preschool, that is where my carrier bags go when I have them for wet clothes... We use more over the winter too or in wet weather as the long sleeves tops that didn't get pushed up enough before washing hands or playing in the water tray need a bag for going home in rather than being put on the line to dry as we do in good drying weather.

You have to look at both ends of a bag's lifecycle. One plastic 'bag for life' takes as much energy as 28 single use ones to make. A canvas bag would need to be used at least 131 times to offset the carbon footprint of making it.

So make sure you do actually reuse a reusable bag.

I take carrier bags back to the supermarket for recycling rather than use as bin bags because ultimately it would still go to landfill.

I'm still using the bag I got at the Millenium Dome - 12 years ago, obviously! It's apparently made of rubber tyres, though not very well though as I've had to sew it up a few times.

I try to avoid carrier bags - currently have them from doing an online supermarket shop last week - and use reusables.

I fill them with stuff for charity shops & then donate the bags as well as the stuff.

I put carrier bags in when my boys pack for camping with school/scouts as they're going to come home with wet muddy stuff that's best seperated from anything not so wet & muddy... THe bags go in the carrier bag recycling when the stuff goes into the washing machine.

When out on a walk, keep some in your rucksack. Then when you stop at a pub or cafe, pop one over each muddy boot, and use handles to tie then round your ankles.
  • If you have a bicycle and need to leave it outside, put a plastic bag over the saddle to keep it dry.;)
  • I cut mine to use as a lining for making kebabs (place a ball of meat under it and squash with a plate) also to layer the kebabs so they dont stick to each other in the freezer :T

  • I use plastic bags to cover my hair when I'm having a deep conditioner at home. I'll stick the bag on then wrap a towel round my head. I used to get funny looks from the family but they're used to it now!

I don't have a wheelie bin, just a black sack, which I have to supply myself.
I live in a gardlenless flat, so I don't have compost so I cannot compost any compostables.
I use these bags mainly for rubbish.
I put food leftovers in them before putting them in the black bag for collection because that black bag would get very manky indeed by the time the fortnightly bin collection came.
They are also good for putting used sanitary products that wont flush in.
I cannot avoid using carriers, because if I didn't use carriers, I would have a lot of smelly messes to clean up, and the binmen would have a manky stinkbomb of a bag to pick up.
If I didn't use carriers, I would by buying plastic bin liners, so carreirs save me doing that.
