run combofix and/or tdss on some of those XP machines with the free antivirus' and tell me what you get... especially if you have children.0

Same applies to many paid ones, they all miss things, the (non-Microsoft) companies that do free, also do paid, the amount of cash handed over has nothing to do with how effective it is, it's the same virus patterns.
Free version of Avast & Avira Free av often beats brands that dont giveaway free versions in AV tests.

Hi all, I have an old laptop that has been gathering dust and it runs on Windows XP. I currently use Norton on my other devices but have used all of that up as it only allows me to put it on 3 laptops/PCs etc.
I don't particularly want to buy software for the old laptop as I probably wont use it that much. What would you say the best free security software is for an older operating system or does all antivirus work with all operating systems?
Linux Mint or Ubuntu.0 -
I use Microsoft Security Essentials as an automatic checker but the following are manually used.
Tune-Up 1- Click Maintenance
Advanced System Care
C Cleaner
Malwarebytes Ante Malware
All of them are free.0
