We (recipients) have no freedom of choice, and the lack of competition has resulted in what can only be described as cartel pricing which both senders and recipients have very little knowledge or control over (indeed may not even be aware until they have been charged the first time!)

You had a clear choice as you could have handled the import yourself? For whatever reason (lack of knowledge I suspect?) you didn't.
