Mysterious payment "Q"

They do.Surely you know whether you deposited a cheque? Somebody like the HMRC wouldn't send a cheque made out to you to your bank.
Most annoying job of the morning in a big branch.
Opening dozens of items of post under dual control, listing cheques individually and then waiting for the part-time cashier to come in to free somebody up to credit them to the customers' accounts.
Took an age.
I didn't realise Halifax still had the old "Q" notation for cheques though. I thought Lloyds would have killed that off last year.0 -
I've received a mysterious deposit to my Halifax account with the description "Q" and type of "DEP". It doesn't seem to have cleared yet.
Does anyone know what this might be?
I'm expecting a refund from HM Revenue & Customs, but the Q description seems a bit strange and wouldn't a bank transfer clear immediately?
Why not just ring them and ask?0 -
I did. Also giving the banks answer and answering the question.
As they normally pay it by bank transfer as I stated.
I presumed people would know Hmrc already have my bank details. Inneficient? Yes.
Hmrc. Yes.:D0 -

Considering how many posts you have made and how many thank yous you have. Surprising answer.

I always try to surprise
Sorry if you thought I attacked you, that was certainly not my intention.0 -
It turns out it was an HMRC cheque. Who knows why they post them to banks rather than doing a direct transfer.0

We often read of electronic payments being made with the wrong account number. The systems do not check the name on the account. Perhaps sending a bank a cheque saying "please credit account number n of Mr. x..." places the onus on the bank to check that the account in question belongs to Mr. x.0

HMRC have been making these repayments by cheque to your bank for a few years now.
It does say on the SA form that that is what they will do if you fill in your bank details.0
