Mysterious payment "Q"

I've received a mysterious deposit to my Halifax account with the description "Q" and type of "DEP". It doesn't seem to have cleared yet.
Does anyone know what this might be?
I'm expecting a refund from HM Revenue & Customs, but the Q description seems a bit strange and wouldn't a bank transfer clear immediately?

Any replies you receive here will be, It 'could' or 'may' or 'possibly'. Nothing will be definitive, just suggestions and assumptions.
What do your bank say ? What do HMRC use as a description for crediting ? Have you asked either of them ?0 -

Thanks - I wonder how long payments from Q Continuum take to clear?0 -

"DEP" is deposit. As in someone's paid a cheque in, and your account has been credited. Which it why it hasn't cleared yet.
No idea what Q means in Halifax-speak. But it's not beyond the realms of possibility that someone has credited the cheque to the wrong account.0 -

Thanks - I'll leave it for a while and bother them about it if it persists. I'll try to report back. I would phone up but I'm abroad at the moment.0 -
Sounds like a cheque deposit to me.0

I am in cyprus at the moment am also expecting a tax repayment from hmrc and have had the same deposit as you. Amount over £ 2000.
Due to finding your post( its unlikely someone has mistakenly deposited money in two different accounts ). I am going to ring them now I suggest you do the same. As it is very strange/suspicious.0 -
Just spoken to Halifax. Very helpfull ( for a change ).
Q is a description for a deposited cheque. They dont key in the payee sometimes apparently.
So it could be Hmrc Payment. They normally pay these by transfer which would show as Hmrc.
Problem solved for me.
Wait for it to clear.
If it does spend it or save it.0 -

Surely you know whether you deposited a cheque? Somebody like the HMRC wouldn't send a cheque made out to you to your bank.0 -

Actually that is precisely what they do do, if you have given them your bank details and asked them to do so. One appeared on my bank statement a couple of weeks ago and I was wondering what it was for several days until I remembered the claim for repayment I had submitted.0
