Why does my Post Office always try to upsell postage?

I weigh my parcel, lady asks 1st or 2nd, I decide.
End of transaction.just passing through.... Nothing to see....0 -
Made a purchase over the net and paid for recorded delivery. The item arrived on the doormat with a thump - no knock or ring at the door. Checked online to see whether they had completed the online tracking only to discover the we had "signed" for the package. The signature was nothing like mine - well I didn't sign it!
Raised this with the PO and after 3 weeks got a bland apology letter - not even an offer of refund (to me or the poster). At least I got the item but what a waste of time and money!
I am not going to let this go - fobbing me off with a standard letter "they take this seriously, etc" when they have FORGED my signature is not quite on!
That sounds like fraud to me....!0 -
Upselling!
I went to complain about the excessive charge of the postage unfortunately the person who ripped my father off wasn't in to defend themselves. I have a re-visit on Tuesday to go and discuss the matter.
Whilst in my 'rant' on Friday they particularily got upset when I mentioned that they were keen to upsell. I was told that they do not in anyway upsell to any customer and that what I hear is a fully approved script created by the Post Office in order to ensure that the customer is fully aware of all the possibilities that the Post Office can offer and if they didn't do this then they could be seen to fail its customers...... I left out any commas or full stops as the response I was blurbed was obviously a scripted response and was delivered without a breath!
I am still puzzled as to why the Post Office would script the fact that you shouldn't send a passport for fear of loss..... that would be like depositing money in a bank and them telling you they may lose all your cash!
Roll on Tuesday......0 -

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I was returnign an item bought on ebay and it had to be tracked so I sued 1st Class recorded. After 10 days there was still no record of delivery (and no refund from seller). When I checked the tracking it kept saying - 'was posted on and is in our system' (or words to that effect). I then messaged the seller to ask if item had been received. Eventually got message back, yes it had been received and I got my refund. Tracking never showed up as delivered and no signature.0 -

You could argue that the sender paid RM for a service that wasn't provided properly but it's the seller's place to challenge that not the recipients.
If the seller had charged ukclare for Recorded Delivery and then not used it that would clearly be a form of fraud.
Now if ukclare had hypothetically claimed not to have received the item; then challenged the signature as not hers in order to get a refund and keep the item that would be a form of fraud too but she clearly didn't do that. (I have heard of this being done to eBayers).I need to think of something new here...0 -
Who is defrauding who?

Quite right, but it does not change the fact that the sender paid for a service that the post office charged extra for and the royal mail did not provide. Either there's a breakdown in communication somewhere (which is unlikely given the big sticker on it which indicates it's to be signed for), or a breakdown in training (which is possible if there are staff turnover issues), or it's wilful negligence on the part of the postie.
Either way, if you go anywhere else and pay for a service that isn't provided, you'd expect to at least get an apology and a refund for the overcharge. Although, as you say, the contract is with the sender so, in UKclare's example, if you think it's worth it, notify the sender and let them deal with it if they want to.
Just getting it out here as I can see some confusion but the Post Office and Royal Mail are not the same thing. The post office are, essentially, a sort of broker for Royal Mail and simply collect the parcels and take payment on their behalf. At least that's how I understand it.
While I may have had a whinge about the post office upselling (and just about to have another lovely visit with them so no doubt more of the same in a bit.) I have never had anything but excellent service from my postie. Only complaint is the post sometimes doesn't arrive until 4pm but that's hardly the end of the world.
I guess from things I've read though, I have either been lucky or just not noticed. I think if someone posted something that should have been signed for through my door I wouldn't even think to be irked so long as I got it! That's just me though.

I'll second the motion about the postie..... absolutely a star come sun, rain or snow...... he does his job!
Whilst i'm moaning about the upselling and the ripping off of the elderly or the not so up on legal liability... I would like to add that I think putting a stamp on an envelope and knowing it is almost 99.9999999999999999999999999999% guaranteed to get to the receipient is such a great service and worth every penny. I appose privatisation as I know posting to less profitable areas will be shockingly hit or miss.0 -

I remember one day mine turned up in the middle of a hail storm just when it was peaking. I couldn't let him walk about in that so invited him in to pass out the worst of it. The state of the mail though; was all soggy!...I think putting a stamp on an envelope and knowing it is almost 99.9999999999999999999999999999% guaranteed to get to the receipient is such a great service and worth every penny.
Indeed.
Today's posting trauma was actually not too bad. All three counters were open (there's a first!) and he only tried to upsell me the one standard parcel packed with a lame "it could take over a week to get there" (incidentally, the ones I posted when I started this thread all arrived inside 4 days). I think he remembered our previous conversation after that and decided to just serve me the postage I'd asked for. He even usefully suggested I could print postage at home. Guess he's not going to like me turning up with 15 parcels next week then when the next lot of my ebay stuff sells. :rotfl:
