Why does my Post Office always try to upsell postage?

  • There are 2 post offices near me - one is absolutely brilliant, always doing their utmost to keep your costs as low as possible, and yet the the PO a mile or so up the road is just as the OP describes!

    Sorry but I disagree.

Special delivery is great if you're sending a valuable item and need it to arrive by a certain time. I did not require either and the staff member should've known this.

Cost of replacement driving licence - £20
Second class mail compensation for lost item - £46

Special delivery wouldn't protect me from identity theft in any way, things can still get lost in the post whether you pay for Special Delivery or not!

it would greatly reduce the chance of it happening
    As i said,an informed decision

    well not quite
you would 'just' get it replaced
    you would have to pay
Also if it was lost then you have the identity theft etc issue
making an informed choice is fine, however there are many many threads on the boards of people who have lost items, lost out etc through losing/not having proof of delivery of items

Totally agree.... but as a person who uses Special Delivery services as and when required who has actually had one go missing and all I got back was the price of the postage .... work that one out. You would still be left with the replacement and potential fraud issue. Remember that all you are insured for is the cost of the contents and this does not include 'consequential losses'.

Special delivery has one use only. When you know they've not got a hope of getting to the address by 9am.

I use it when a customers address looks like a remote farm, etc. Gotta love posting stuff for free!
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

how do you work that out?
SD 9am is a far more expensive service
My old office had plenty of rural places on 2 postcodes.
you just fire a guy out ASAP.
don't think we ever missed one

You must have worked in a far more competant office than the ones I've done it to. I've pulled it off a fair few times. Works especcially well just before Chrimbo:D

  • I post quite a few ebay items which are near enough identical. It is amazing how many variations of postage costs they can come up with - it is never the same price twice!
  • Made a purchase over the net and paid for recorded delivery. The item arrived on the doormat with a thump - no knock or ring at the door. Checked online to see whether they had completed the online tracking only to discover the we had "signed" for the package. The signature was nothing like mine - well I didn't sign it!
Raised this with the PO and after 3 weeks got a bland apology letter - not even an offer of refund (to me or the poster). At least I got the item but what a waste of time and money!
I am not going to let this go - fobbing me off with a standard letter "they take this seriously, etc" when they have FORGED my signature is not quite on!
