Sad but banks will now chuck £££ at anyone who complains.

On any issue that is not clear-cut, it's a lot cheaper for the banks to just lob an apology and a few quid over to the complainant than entertaining the complaint for much longer.

Funny thing about it though is it is our money they are chucking back at complaints. Even more so the banks who are owned by the government or that building society that so obviously does not want to be a bank but yet is quite happy to screw you over like any other.

See the upside - - - paying the occasional £100 compensation on border-line cases is still way more gentle on the tax payers' purse than going through a full-blown FOS complaint.
  • Which costs the bank £500 plus all the man hours spent gathering evidence etc.

Sometimes it is cheaper just to throw money at a problem. Unfortunately that does lead to unscrupulous people taking advantage but they are a tiny minority of bank customers.
