Halifax Compensation

I have been having problems with our joint account card.
For some unexplicable reason my card would not allow me to pay nor draw money using counter services.

I found CS in branch rather unhelpful and they failed to solve the problem,in fact they created another by cancelling my card then telling me it had all been sorted. I sort help from 4 branches having to go to the branch where we opened our acc twice!

So now i am without my debit card and will have to wait for up to ten days for a new one.

What is a reasonable amount of compensation to ask for, given it has been a problem created by halifax and not me?

    £50, what has been lost?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Sounds like your chip has got damaged. Common problem caused by poor storage in purse/wallet.
Only way to solve IS A NEW CARD.
So the staff have done what you wanted to solve the problem.

Its a joint account, so just get the joint party to give you some cash. Or go shopping with you.

    Compensation... You having a laugh....

Perhaps you should be payong Halifax for a new card to be provided.

I sort help from 4 branches
Possibly adding to the confusion by involving too many different people?

New card sounds like the right solution to the problem. Compensation? Did they really create the problem? If so, £25-£50 sounds about right.

Compensation? Well to be honest the only thing they would and should compensate you for is if you've had to make any extra trips to branch or phone calls. So personally £10 would suffice. This is more than enough, throwing £50 quid at someone for this would open up a can of worms, I mean what if something else goes wrong, how much can you squirm out of them next time? Stop being greedy.

The only other compensation you may receive if is you have incurred any charges because you have not been able to use your card and you have had to use alternative methods e.g. credit card.

It sounds like your CHIP is damaged, so you will be without the use of a card for about 4/5 days, your partner has their card you can use. It's in these scenarios when it is useful to have another card account with the bank as you can transfer funds to there and use that card. Even if you bank elsewhere you could send a fast payment to them and use that card for the short term. Yes it is inconvenient, but get a grip and put your complaint into some form of perspective.
  • There is no reasonable amount of compensation to ask for.

You are not entitled to any, and if you ask Halifax you should be embarrassed.

Can you prove its a Halifax problem? Can you prove that its not you that has damaged the card? Its not exactly difficult to damage the chip, which will cause the effects you describe.

I could cause the same problem by attacking my debit card with a hammer (note: I'm not suggesting that you did this), could I expect compensation for not being able to use it as well?

    Compensation: Nil.
Good will payment: Free replacement card (just in case it WAS a Halifax fault)
  • If a mistake has been made then it may have been them cancelling the card at the bank - it's not clear whether they ordered a replacement at the time or not.

If they ordered a replacement at the time (and told you about it) then they haven't really done anything wrong unless the card was defective.
  • Thanks for all your advice.

I would never knowingly damage my own card because of the hassle, who needs it?

Halifax acknowledged the problem was theirs and owned it.

They apologised profusely and paid me £100 for the inconvenience.

Its a real shame that in 2012 we as a nation we still believe the business owners are always right, judging by your comments.

The lesson here is to stand your ground, if the business is wrong they will compensate and rightly so.

They are here to provide us with a service; which dont forget we pay for!

I thought my comment said that they should pay you compensation.

How much did you pay for the damaged card again?

I'm sure you didnt knowingly damage it. But the chips on cards can easily stop working....
Just put a blob of chocolate over it and see....

Sad but banks will now chuck £££ at anyone who complains.

You pay for your banking ????

Not saying they are always right. But like many things in life products break.....

When your car stops working do you want compensation from the manufacture ??? Or do you pay to fix it....
