Rehoming a dog after the owner dies

The Oldies Club mentioned above are an excellent group. Definitely try contacting them. Their representatives also post on The Refuge where you can also advertise privately, and of course DogPages, which has also been suggested already.
It would definitely be better if you can go through a rescue, so there is some backup if the home doesn't work out.
Would you mind telling us which charity it was? I know a few people who donate to Cinnamon Trust because they believe their pets will be cared for if they die, but if they don't honour that, they would want to know! When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
Poor little guy, hope he finds a good home soon. We took on a rescued dog over Christmas with the intention of rehoming her, as we didn't think she'd get on with the other dog. Couldn't have been more wrong, she's laid with him now asleep and when she went in for an op recently he cried all day.One day I might be more organised...........

Penny Watcher, unfortunately we are not going top try and re home him with us as we have been advised not to by our vetAs much as we want to we know it just wouldnt work.
Pboae, Yep thats the one! We want to do somethin, like complain as this is terrible. My nan always told us 'dont worry about Oscar, the trust will take him'. Its upset my dad alot as this was the last member of his familySo not only has he got that upset, hes also got the worry of trying to rehome this dear old dog

I applaud you for everything that you have done, your nan would be proud. Have you thought about going to the local radio and paper and telling them of your nans wishes. It might be worth a shot.
I hope it all works out for you x x0 -
Do try Dogpages - they have fantastic forums and the people there are very knowledgeable. They'll be able to point you in the direction of helpful organisations.
Also, it's good that you've spoken to your local vet, but try talking to others locally too. Sometimes they will know of smaller local organisations which foster or rehome dogs. If Oscar has any ongoing medical problems then perhaps the money donated at the funeral might be worth putting aside to pay for his veterinary care - this might make him more easily rehomed. I know of epileptic dogs whose medication is paid for by the previous owner, while any new conditions are the responsibility of the new owner.
Often these situations are best resolved by word of mouth but vets often know who would make a particularly good home for which dog so are a good starting point.
I wish you all the best.0 -

Wasn't suggesting you did hun.Sticking to the vet's recommendation is exactly the right thing to do in your situation. I think it's brilliant that you're going to so much trouble over a dog that's not really your responsibility. Well Done you. :T
It was just a bit general advice for anyone who was thinking of introducing a new dog to the family.
Best of luck and let us know what happens.

Hello, have you tried the Cinnamon Trust, I think they are based down your way, unless this is the charity you have had the problem with????!!!0

Toshkininny: The Cinnamon Trust is the one were having problems with
Which really shocked us! Weve heard such wonderfull things about them and our nan was always praising them and saying how happy Oscar would be. We were heartbroken when they told us they were full
I will keep you updated, my mums currently really upset as she hates to see an animal go in a cats and dogs home. We have always been the charity case for animals (we tend up getting ones we didnt plan!).
For example:
When we got our dogs my parents has already picked Megan and then there was only one puppy left who was a bit of a rascal (like chasing the bull and jumping in the ducks pond), so no one really wanted him. We took him aswell!
Our parrot was my brothers but when he moved to an apartment couldnt take him and said hed take him back to the pet shop, my mum refused and took him in!
Actually I think nearly every animal has been unwanted and weve ended up taking it, and weve never been to a cats and dogs home. We always take the sob stories!Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
Sorry, ignore my last post, I've just realised you've answered that one!
I'm very surprised, I'm one of the people they call on to help out voluntarily, and I'm not very happy with that attitude if that's the case.
I don't know why they are saying they are full, I thought the idea was to foster the dog out to somebody willing to take it on longterm? Why don't you ask the charity that question? (sorry if you already have!!)0 -
kr15snw, please please try the Oldies Club first, they will try and find a foster home for her rather than put her into kennels. At her age, kennels will be really tough on her. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0
