washing machine problem - wont drain

Today our washing machine wont drain, it's stuck with water in it, fortunately below the door level so I opened the door and took the clothes out. I'm thinking I'll need to clean the filter at the bottom, but it's so low down I will not be able to catch any of the water that escapes, and obviously there's still quite a lot…

How did you get the cover off? I can't get mine off and it's driving me potty because I know there's something stuck in it.
