washing machine problem - wont drain

Today our washing machine wont drain, it's stuck with water in it, fortunately below the door level so I opened the door and took the clothes out. I'm thinking I'll need to clean the filter at the bottom, but it's so low down I will not be able to catch any of the water that escapes, and obviously there's still quite a lot of water in the machine.

Can anybody offer any advice on how to do this?

shallow tray (I've used oven trays before now), a bucket to pour it into when full, plenty of towels.

From what you describe it probably is the filter that needs cleaning.

Mine has a small pipe that pulls out from the side behind the flap, I can get most of the water out via this before I need to undo the filter cap.

I cant undo the filter cap, it seems very tight. Is there a special tool to undo these things? It seems to have a big slot in it.

    It's an Indesit WD12

Take the outlet pipe out of the soakaway pipe and lay as low as poss on floor with the end in a container. Machine should gravity empty

I broke mine the first time I had to do it - use pliers/mole grips nowadays and brute strength.

Once or twice it's been jammed by something and I've had to tilt the machine one way or another, and ended up fishing out bits of screwdriver or bra wires.

I managed to drain it by switching it off on the wall for 5 minutes with all the knobs turned to off, then switching it back on and setting it to drain. It made quite a bit of noise when doing this, though. However I still want to undo the drain plug on the front to check for a blockage, but I cannot undo it!

Another problem is the machine is wedged into a tight space, it's going to be difficult to pull it out.

Pull it out by opening the door and putting your hand into the drum.

Indesit WD12. We're renting, this is the first real problem we've had with it in 3 years, apart from the time the door handle broke and I fitted a new one myself. Seems to have a lot of complaints from people online, though.

Sorted it. There was a small plastic bag stuck in the filter.
  • very re-cycle friendly if you are washing your plastic bags
