Too slow for I player / you tube etc

I have just run an internet speed test and upload and download was 0.4mb on talk talk, I can't watch anything on bbc iplayer or videos on you tube etc. It's not the laptop as its the same on the ipad / phone etc.

Is there anything I can do, or do I need to change providers?

thanks
karen

What speed does talktalk say you should get? Any provider will be about the same speed in an off peak time. The difference in the quality and apparent speed tends to be in the early evening when everybody is downloading at the same time slowing down the speed.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Thanks for the reply, to be honest I don't know what I should get, I haven't been able to watch you tube videos for weeks, but used to be able to. I just had a look on U switch broadband in my area and it shows virgin media as around 15mb?

    Any ideas, thankyou

  • Have you tried re-booting your router? Mine was running at 0.7mb last week. After I re-booted the router it went to 7.4mb.

I have just run a talk talk speed test and it said 0.32mb which is quite good. So should that be enough to watch videos etc?
    thanks
  • Sounds junk but its not too slow to watch youtube. I used to have 75k 'broadband' . Press play then press pause then come back in a minute and you can watch the vid

Any ideas why we can't watch anything then, like I said it can be the pc because the ipad is the same. You can watch about 10 seconds then wait about 20 seconds to load the next 10 secs?

    thanks

Your speeds are way too slow! Lets try to trouble shoot
The first step is to find out what speeds you should be getting.
Put your phone number or postcode into this web page and you should get a list of internet providers.
Under Summary click on BT ADSL and you should get a list like this
    BT ADSL broadband availability

You are connected to the xxxx telephone exchange.
    • ADSL is available in your area
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support
    up to 0.5Mbps via ADSL
1.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
    2Mbps or greater via ADSL2+
    Standard ADSL RAG results

    • You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
    • You cannot receive 1Mbps ADSL
    • You can receive 512kbps ADSL
    • You can receive 256kbps ADSL
You are approximately 3.32km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!
Now copy and paste it into a reply, xxxx out any personal info.

Further down under Summary is Cable, if it is available the post these results as well

You're Internet connection speed is far too slow for streaming. For whatever reason it sounds like your broadband speed has dropped significantly recently. I'd try turning your router off and back on.

you really need to post your line stats in order to get an idea if that's as fast as you should be getting or not...to do this you need to log into your router, do you know how ?? You will be looking for speed up/down, line attenuation up/down, and snrm up/down.
Post those figures up here and we will be able to advise ...
