Calling Someone's Mobile? Halve the cost article discussion

I registered with the above service this morning and found that when I phoned another mobile using my mobile I was charged 10p per minute not 6p. I tried the same number on my landline which was 6p (the correct price)
I am not sure why this has occured as my mobile is definitely registered with them as well as my landline. Any ideas?
Another thing I thought of asking, is 1899 and 18185 the same company as I am registered with both and somehow the calls have been cross wired and I am paying 1899's price instead of 18185?
Any ideas? I have written to them to ask about it too.0 -
Their mobile rates are different to their landline rates:

I hadn't noticed before, but Martin's article is incorrect.
EDIT: The article now shows the correct 10p/min rate to mobiles when using 18185's non-BT access numbers (08081703703 & 02081802828). It's perhaps worth noting that these calls incur a slightly lower 4p connection charge.0 -
Like nellinda above, I had the same experience... registered... got the confirmation email and tried a call to a UK mobile... the tariff message said "10p per minute" not the advertised 6p!
I contacted them to quesiton this. Here is their reply:
"Sometimes the information about rates on our website isn’t up to date. If you activate the tariff message you hear the current rate before each call. The tariff message is always up to date."
Now, 10p is still low during the day, but that's a 66% increase and not the advertised rate on their website. How hard is it to update a website with the correct rates, especially when it's one of their primary rates - UK Mobile?!
At least they tell you in advance, but now others are looking more competitive.0 -
Can I just clarify the situation with 18185
Its still 6p/min to call a mobile from a landline
But its now 10p/min to call a mobile via an overide from a mobile.
The article is updated and correct

As the link iamsam kindly included in his post above shows, 18185's weekday rate for calling a UK mobile from a registered UK mobile is 10p/minute. The 6p/minute price shown in the MSE UK CallChecker is the cost from a registered BT residential landline.littleurchin wrote: »Like nellinda above, I had the same experience... registered... got the confirmation email and tried a call to a UK mobile... the tariff message said "10p per minute" not the advertised 6p!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I have just tested it and i can confirm that if you call via the 18185 access number from a BT Landline it clearly says 6p a minute. However if you call using the 0808 or 020 access numbers its 10p a minute whether your using a landline or a mobile.
Virgin Media customers need to use the 0808 access free from VM but the calls will be 10p a minute peak and not 6p.0 -
Thanks Martin & Heinz
I've found the reason for the price difference - I'm phoning from a VirginMedia cable line (still refered to as NTL or Telewest on 18185's site). They charge 10p from these lines, as with calls from mobiles.
You might want to add a mention of this to the article?
As I said earlier, it's still cheap and cheaper than Virgin. So it's all good.
Thanks for a great article.0 -

I just pointed that out in the previous post to yours.:D
However if you make lots of mobile calls from Virgin Media during the Evenings it MIGHT be worth adding phonemobile for £1.50p a month and getting your Evening calls down to 7.50p a minute (6p connection) instead of 18185 10p a minute (5p connection).

18185's charge for mobiles via those other access numbers has been 10p for quite a long time.
However, you might notice that 0870 calls are cheaper, though the rate is actually announced as 5p not the 3p on the website
There are other callthrough firms that can reach mobiles (including some foreign) on weekdays via 0870 numbers, so for longer calls it may be worth going via two providers (it does take a while to connect the second one).
4p connect, 5p/min

Hi Redux.
I tried the 0870 access number mentioned here http://www.planettalkinstant.com/PlanetTalk0870/tabid/57/Default.aspx
and it didnt work to both to an orange and a T Mob number.
Do you have to dial UK Mobile Number in Intl Format?
Shame about that, because if it did,you could use it direct from your BT Line at weekday evenings at 3.95p a minute to get cheap calls to most UK Mobiles. Cheaper then 18185 6p a minute.0
