You don't get it jouef. If myself, (and I presume thousands upon thousands of people exactly like myself), are refused tapwater than I, (and they), will never step foot in that restaurant ever again.

Is that a good way to run a business?

I didn't say any business should refuse tap water. I pointed out the true cost of supplying it. In an earlier post, I said were I in catering I would give away tap water and use the optional-charity-donation approach to extract the PR value. It is a business decision to supply it free, not a public right to demand it be supplied free - perhaps that's what you don't get.

I can buy a litre of Blackcurrant in supermarket for £1.00 they can buy it alot cheaper. At the prices Galgorm charge if they can't afford to give Blackcurrant (coloured water) for free then they shouldn't be in business.

    ?????????

You do know they're running a business, right??

If they start giving away blackcurrant drinks for free, then people will start ordering it instead of coke or fanta or sprite.

What else do you think they should give for free? Chips? After all whats the price of a couple of spuds?
  • In Spain, I believe licensed premises have to supply tap water even if you dont wish to purchase anything else. Is that the same in England?

Speranzas Belfast charged me 50p a while back for tap water. Told them I will not be back and I won't. We had already had a few cokes and some wine.

Went to the Carrickdale (In Co.Louth, but near Newry) for sunday lunch a few weeks back and they have jugs of water and jugs of Orange Squash available for everyone.
this is the way it should be

Bloke goes into a bar, buys a pie and a pint and finishes them. Then he asks the landlord for a glass, licks it and hands it back. The landlord says "Hey, I gotta wash that now" but the bloke says "What's the problem? It cost you nothing to fill it up".

Not again jouef! The landlord has a knife, fork and plate to wash too. Can't you just see water as part of the process of eating?

And just as importantly, they need profit to run a business.

If everyone came in and ordered tap water with their meals, then thats a revenue stream gone.

I really dont get the "taking the hump" approach. Its all part of eating out. If you get it free then great, if you have to pay and it was your preference to have tap water with your meal, then so what?

Its like poppadums in an indian restaurant - some restaurants charge for them, some places you get them free.

If the overall cost of the meal / experience is within reasonable parameters, i dont see the problem.

I cant ever see myself saying - "i had a lovely meal and evening out with my wife and friends, but we'll not be back as they charged me 50p for a glass of water"

this is the way it should be

    Why?

If you're getting "free" drinks, then they're making it elsewhere - either using cheaper cuts of meat or produce or charging more than they otherwise would for the meal.
