Please help me, need to fix car!

Options
I'm looking to improve the car to make to get the best out of it as possible and make it as efficient as possible I have a 2002 fiat punto. It has 90,000 on the clock, 6 previous owners, who I don't think looked after the car in the best possible way.

Basically, my car wouldn't move as it ran out of petrol. Is there anything I should change on the car because it ran out of petrol?

I'm looking at changing the spark plugs are these any good?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-024223...7529551&sr=1-8

I'm also looking at getting these to clean out all the crap out of the fuel system.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Redex-RDX02-...7529954&sr=8-1

Or because I've ran out of petrol, should I just replace the fuel pump with a new one.

Is there anything else I should change on the car? Or possibly should I just get a full service history?

somebody said this:
New oil and filter.
New plugs, leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap
New air filter
New Fuel filter

That'd be a good start.
No need to change the fuel pump - it either works or it doesnt.

New fuel filter? = http://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-In...7543260&sr=1-1

New Air Filter (gonna treat myself!) = http://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Pe...543313&sr=8-15

rotor arm? Can't seem to find this for the fiat punto 2002. any of this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_tr...r+arm&_sacat=0

not sure what kind of leads I should be looking for to get can you put me in the right direction please.

distrubitor cap? could you point me in the right direction on ebay or w/e in which ones I should be buying?

Can someone help me find the following above and is anything else I should be replacing!

Will thank everyone!

You shouldn't need plugs; leads; dizzy cap; or rotor arm just 'cos you've run out of fuel. Just a new fuel filter and clean the system.
Those Amazon links don't seem to be working.

Most of those things are nothing to do with it running out of petrol. The exceptions might be the fuel pump and filter.

Did it run OK before you ran out of fuel? Is the engine starting at all now? Are you getting any other symptoms? A non start could be an airlock in the fuel system, or the fuel pump not priming the system properly.

If you know what you're doing, you could ease off a fuel line near the engine and see if fuel is coming through. If you don't knwo what you're doing, I'd get a garage to do it.

None of that is necessary because you ran out of fuel. Most people who run out of fuel just put fuel in and leave it at that.

Relax, get a Haynes manual, decide which sensible maintenance procedures to do, and do them in a calm and orderly fashion ;)

^ All the above is assuming the car actually does run now, I was under the impression it did?

as sailor sam said, no need for the other junk, should just get away with changing the filter

bear in mind that there should be a mesh filter on the fuel pump (assuming its inside the tank on puntos) coupled with the fuel filter id doubt much sediment has made its way to the injectors
in theory the fuel will have been filtered twice before it goes near yr engine

change the filter, pop some of that fuel system cleaner stuff in,
as for service all you really need is an oil change and air filter change, but not nessassary just to get the car started
  • thanks for all your replies. Sorry the car does work. Car runs fine, just want to make the car run the best possible way.

Could I get some suggestions for the following please?

Probably don't need all of the stuff I've mentioned, but I just want some piece of mind!

rotor arm? Can't seem to find this for the fiat punto 2002. any of this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_tr...r+arm&_sacat=0

Err, rota arm... dizzy cap... on a Punto? I don't think so! If you have merely run out of fuel, there shouldn't be a problem unless there was one before hand.

Seriously? Is this a wind up? Why do all the links not work?

No idea, no wind up at all.

Ok so this is what i'll do/get

    Fuel system cleaner.
    Spark Plugs
    New Oil/Filter
Leads - Can someone put me in the right direction for leads

New Fuel Filter (this ok?) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-In...7543260&sr=1-1

Petrol also seems to be going fast. One bar lasted 35 miles, that good? There was a problem with the flexi which had to be replaced, got a new one and the mechanic says that can lose you fuel but it the petrol doesn't last long as before. And on a bar and half it still has that low fuel yellow dot.

    Many thanks!

Punto has electronic ignition doesn't it (crank sensor driven)? So no dizzy/rotor arm to change.

I'd just go with the basics to start with, leads, plugs, oil, oil filter and air filter. Go to your local autofactors and they'll be able to sort you out, I've found a lot of the time getting lots of bits from various sources on the net can end up more expensive due to multiple postage costs.

If it hasn't been well cared for earlier then a fuel filter change is probably due but I wouldn't be rushing out to do it.

    Haven't looked at the links.
